The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) plays a crucial role in the initiation, monitoring, and termination of hemodialysis treatments for patients. As a vital member of the inter-professional team focused on patient-centered care, the RPN is responsible for conducting patient assessments, providing health education and family support, maintaining accurate documentation, and managing hemodialysis equipment. The RPN must respond effectively to rapid changes in patients' hemodynamic conditions, collaborating closely with Registered Nurses and the broader healthcare team. Additionally, the RPN will actively participate in quality improvement initiatives and research projects within the unit.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of an accredited Registered Practical Nursing Program.
- Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (Level II: Basic Rescuer).
- Completion of a medication administration course for RPNs.
- Successful completion of Nephrology 1 and 2 courses from a recognized Nephrology Nursing Certificate Program (candidates who have not completed these courses must enroll within one year and finish within three years).
- Health Assessment / Physical Assessment course is an asset.
- Minimum of 5 years of medical/surgical acute care nursing experience.
- At least 3 years of hemodialysis experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
- Experience in medication administration via multiple routes.
- Practicum experience (ranging from 0 to 485 hours).
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proven team-building and conflict resolution abilities.
- Excellent patient assessment capabilities.
- Understanding and adherence to patient and staff safety policies to create a safe and inclusive environment.
- Ability to perform duties professionally and courteously while delivering high-quality work in accordance with UHN standards.
- Compliance with vaccination requirements, including COVID-19, unless exempt for medical reasons.
