Position Overview
The Senior Mining Engineer will report directly to the Head of Mine Planning and Capital Projects, playing a pivotal role in the development of Preliminary Feasibility Studies (PFS) for our underground mining operations. This position involves not only the creation of PFS but also the support of long-term mining strategies, including five-year and one-year operational plans.
As a vital member of the Mine Planning Team, the Senior Mining Engineer will operate from the Calgary Corporate Office, adhering to a Monday to Friday schedule, with occasional site visits required. The successful candidate will become an integral part of the Mine Planning team, serving as the primary contact for PFS development for our underground mining projects.
Key Responsibilities
• Exhibit strong safety leadership in all daily activities;
• Execute all responsibilities in alignment with corporate values and standards;
• Develop PFS for underground mining initiatives;
• Collaborate effectively with external technical consultants and contractors;
• Assist in formulating life-of-mine plans and long-range operational strategies;
• Conduct regular meetings to provide updates on PFS development to stakeholders;
• Establish efficient water management systems;
• Design optimized underground mine layouts, including ramps and essential infrastructure;
• Offer ventilation engineering support through simulations and network designs;
• Undertake field assessments to ensure compliance with safety protocols;
• Prepare monthly reports and corporate documentation as needed;
• Contribute to the development of Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP);
• Mentor and guide junior engineering staff;
• Provide technical expertise in geotechnical monitoring and support system design;
• Cultivate strong relationships with contractors and stakeholders.
Qualifications
• A degree in Mining Engineering with approximately 10 years of experience in underground mining or technical consulting. Experience in supervisory or mentorship roles is preferred. Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in Canada is required, with a preference for those registered in the Northwest Territories;
• PMP certification or experience in project management and scheduling is essential;
• Practical experience in sub-level caving and block caving mining methods;
• Proficiency in capital forecasting, financial modeling, and economic analysis;
• Demonstrated expertise in mine design, scheduling, ventilation, and drill & blast operations;
• Mandatory proficiency in Deswik; familiarity with other software (e.g., MS Office Suite, Ventsim, AutoCAD, or Vulcan) is advantageous;
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills in English;
• Proven leadership, organizational, and planning capabilities;
• Knowledge of mining safety regulations and practices;
• Effective time management and decision-making abilities;
• Familiarity with SAP is a plus;
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively to enhance operational efficiency;
• A valid Class 5 driver's license is necessary;
• Experience in the mining sector, particularly in Northern Canada, and an understanding of the regional regulatory framework is preferred.
