Animal Care Technician Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Animal Care Technician to join our team at the Calgary Zoo. As an Animal Care Technician, you will play a critical role in the daily care and well-being of a variety of animals, ensuring their health and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide prescribed diets and treatments to animals
  • Monitor and report on animal diet, weight, score, body condition, and psychological behavior
  • Monitor and measure environmental needs of animals
  • Report changes or concerns in animal behavior to supervisors and veterinary team
  • Complete accurate and detailed checklists, electronic records, reports, and other documents
  • Propose, implement, and track behavioral training and enrichment for animals
  • Provide the highest standards of care for animals in accordance with established protocols and procedures
  • Maintain approved organizational standards for exhibits and back-of-house areas
  • Demonstrate safe work practices
  • Participate in timely review of protocols and mandatory internal training
  • Identify maintenance needs for designated work area
  • Provide talks, demonstrations, and experiences as directed
  • Assist with animal capture and restraint for veterinary procedures, shipments, transfers, or other complex procedures
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, zoology, or equivalent
  • At least one year of experience in animal care, with zoo animal care experience considered an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License
  • Superior knowledge of zoological and wildlife species
  • Working knowledge of zoo terminology, awareness of animal welfare and conservation
  • Zoological Information Management Software (ZIMS) knowledge is an asset
  • Adaptability to changing priorities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and successfully in a team environment
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment
Working Conditions:
  • Shift work, 6:00am-8:00pm, 7 days a week
  • Schedule may change at limited notice based on operational need
  • Call-ins possible at any hours for emergency needs
  • Working in indoor and outdoor environments with various temperature conditions
  • Walking, sitting, crouching, standing, climbing, reaching required
  • Pushing/pulling up to 45kg
  • Lifting up to 35kg
