This role is responsible for the implementation and continuous improvement of Health and Safety programs in a manufacturing setting. The successful candidate will provide technical and professional support services to operations and report directly to the local Plant Manager and functionally to the Director of Health, Safety & Environment.
Key Responsibilities- Partner with Plant Manager to execute safety strategies and meet business goals.
- Coach staff and supervisors on leadership behaviors to improve communication, safety behaviors, and activities on the shop floor.
- Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.
- Apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate hazards and reduce risks in the facility or site.
- Implement and administer hazard control programs for respective Plants.
- Lead the application of internal and external standards to support hazard reduction and compliance.
- Monitor legislative changes and make recommendations based on their potential impact to the business.
- Support the development, review, and update of JHA's and SOP's.
- Perform safety evaluations, site-level self-audits, and run site safety committees and ergonomics programs.
- Deliver instructor-led training for EHS courses as required.
- Maintain working relationships with Regulatory Agencies and participate in industry-specific organizations.
- Provide guidance on incident reporting and investigation programs to ensure company standards and processes are met.
- Review incidents, ensure Root Cause Analysis is completed, and drive corrective actions through health checks.
- Maintain facility training calendars and ensure training records are maintained per regulatory requirements.
- Implement written EHS programs and company safety policies aligned with jurisdictional requirements.
- Administer the local hearing conservation program per regulatory requirements.
- Work with plant leadership to ensure facility monthly safety inspections are completed and make recommendations to remedy noted deficiencies.
- Provide internal support for workers' compensation cases and act as the facility safety contact for work comp claims questions.
- Manage the plants' budgets for health and safety spending.
- Facilitate new hire safety onboarding for new employees.
- Maintain metrics in accordance with company leadership requirements.
- Requires a minimum of a BA/BS degree in occupational safety, science, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Three to five years of prior experience in a manufacturing setting working in a Health and Safety role.
- Professional EHS certification is desired.
- Proven leadership skills in a manufacturing environment.
- A team player who can lead by example and influence.
- Sound, comprehensive knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
- Detailed understanding of general industry standards and knowledge of basic health and safety concepts.
- Ability to chair management/employee meetings and presentations.
- Above-average communication skills to enable the transfer of clear and concise information at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to facilitate the process of learning amongst supervisors and the shop floor.
- Ability to relentlessly follow up to achieve stated deadlines.
- Ability to organize the workload and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Passion for results, strong work ethic, and acts with a sense of urgency and purpose balanced with strategic and day-to-day operational intent.
- Superior analytical skills with the ability to identify problems, resolve issues, mitigate risks, and initiate continuous improvements initiatives.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and a wide variety of tasks to meet deadlines, all with a sense of urgency.
- Strong understanding of business processes outside specific areas of responsibility.
- Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities with the ability to make decisions under pressure in an environment of rapid change.
