About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Registered Practical Nurse to join our team at The Royal Mental Health Centre. As a key member of our interdisciplinary team, you will provide person-centered care to adults with mental health challenges and varying stages of cognitive deficits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maximize patient function, participation, and control in their recovery.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle changes through health teaching and education.
  • Provide care that is tailored to the unique needs of each patient, incorporating knowledge of mental health challenges and cognitive deficits.
  • Identify patient needs and respond promptly and appropriately.
  • Monitor and document patient response to therapeutic interventions and report unexpected outcomes to the Registered Nurse.
  • Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to effectively manage rapidly changing situations.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and comply with The Royal's vision and value statements, relevant policies, procedures, and routines.
  • Promote a supportive working relationship and effective communication among the interdisciplinary team.
  • Establish and promote effective therapeutic relationships with patients and their families.
  • Accountable to meet College of Nurses of Ontario Standards for RPNs.
  • Engage in ongoing learning, education, and reflective practice to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Administer medications and perform treatments within the RPN's full scope of practice, according to applicable regulations and College of Nurses of Ontario Professional Standards.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a recognized Diploma Program in Practical Nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of two years recent experience with adults with psychiatric/mental health illness preferred.
  • Knowledge of CNO Standards regarding RPN scope of practice.
  • Understanding of MHA and relevant legislation.
  • WHMIS update in the preceding 12 months.
  • Fire Training update in the past 12 months.
  • CPR Certification within the last 12 months.
  • Completion of Prevention of Violence in the Workplace training.
  • Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) training or other related dementia care training is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills required.
  • Current knowledge of mechanical lifts, transferring, and positioning techniques.
  • English language proficiency (Level A- is mandatory in oral comprehension, expression, reading, and writing). Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.
