Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Special Risk Extension, the Underwriting Lead is responsible for the comprehensive evaluation, formulation, enhancement, and potential creation of underwriting protocols, standards, practices, and tools tailored for the Special Risk Extension (SRE) sector. This role is pivotal in shaping the long-term strategic vision and future direction of underwriting within the SRE portfolio.

The Underwriting Lead collaborates closely with both internal and external stakeholders to establish and implement an SRE underwriting framework that is clearly understood and effectively executed by the SRE team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and engage in the formulation and implementation of underwriting controls and standards for SRE.
  • Design and present underwriting standards, practices, and tools that align with the specific transactional underwriting environment, supporting both portfolio and individual risk assessment.
  • Ensure adherence to core quality assurance controls, maintaining minimum standards in an objective, independent, consistent, and risk-focused manner.
  • Work alongside management and underwriting teams to guarantee uniformity in underwriting quality and execution, fostering productive relationships with business partners based on trust and mutual respect.
  • Evaluate the execution of underwriting controls and standards, identify trends, assess the potential implications of any deficiencies, and propose corrective measures to the business.
  • Stay informed on provincial and federal regulations, industry developments, and trends, sharing insights with colleagues.
  • Guide and support the creation of underwriting and training resources in collaboration with partners.
  • Act as the primary contact for internal and external underwriting audits, ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
  • Advise on the development and approval of new products, forms, and coverage enhancements.
  • Draft underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Special Risk Extension to contribute to the department's strategic objectives in alignment with the corporate vision.
  • Provide insights on strategies for sustained profitability and growth within the SRE sector.
  • As a subject matter expert, offer market insights, data, and best practices for strategic initiatives.
  • Participate in the formulation of multi-year tactical solutions that facilitate the execution of the approved strategic direction.
Qualifications
  • Degree or diploma in business administration or a related field.
  • Completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP or FCIP) designation.
  • A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in an insurance setting, with a focus on commercial and/or fleet underwriting.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, policies, procedures, and practices related to automobile insurance and registration.
  • Advanced understanding of underwriting practices for automobile, general liability, and motor truck cargo.
  • Proven experience in building relationships with business partners.
