Job Summary

The Government of Northwest Territories is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Relief Coroner to join our team. As a Relief Coroner, you will play a critical role in providing frontline services at the scenes of deaths, working closely with investigative partners such as the RCMP, local health authorities, and funeral homes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct external examinations and prepare investigative reports
  • Complete body removal and oversee the collection of toxicological samples
  • Work in cooperation with investigative partners to gather evidence and information
  • Prepare and submit reports to the Deputy Chief Coroner and other stakeholders
Requirements
  • Proficient oral, written, and electronic communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to accept direction and work effectively independently and as part of a team
  • Proven evaluation, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and policies
  • Ability to interact with the public in a courteous and prompt manner
  • Ability to identify issues and weigh facts to draw supportable and appropriate conclusions
Working Conditions

The Relief Coroner will work in a variety of settings, including remote wilderness areas, and will be exposed to physical demands such as searching scenes, accessing and retrieving deceased persons, and conducting external examinations. The incumbent must be able to work in all weather conditions and be aware of the potential risks associated with the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Coroners Act, NWT Evidence Act, Vital Statistics Act, and Public Health Act
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (ATTIPP) and relevant GNWT legislation
  • Ability to research, read, understand, and explain medical terms
  • Ability to operate confidentially while carrying out the duties of the Relief Coroner
  • Ability to commit to actively upholding and consistently practicing personal diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness, as well as safety and sensitivity approaches in the workplace
