Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) stands as a distinguished Indigenous Institute, acknowledged by the community, governmental bodies, and higher education institutions as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP provides a diverse range of educational opportunities, including postsecondary, secondary, and vocational training. At the STEAM Academy, learners have the chance to achieve a high school diploma, an industry-recognized college diploma, and gain practical work experience in their chosen fields. The academy is designed to offer a cohesive program that equips students with the academic, technical, and workplace skills essential for success in the job market.

Role Overview

Under the direction of the Principal at the STEAM Academy, the Temporary Educator will take on assignments that may range from a single day to several days. This role is crucial for maintaining continuity in learning when regular staff members are unavailable. The Temporary Educator is expected to uphold the governance values and operational policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while nurturing positive relationships with colleagues, students, stakeholders, and the broader community. This position contributes to a culturally supportive educational environment that aligns with the Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni principles of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Temporary Educator encompass, but are not limited to:

Instructional Planning & Development

  • Employing diverse teaching strategies, instructional resources, and assessments to cater to the varied needs and interests of students;

Assessment Implementation & Classroom Management

  • Assisting in evaluating and addressing student needs;
  • Supporting the execution of a designated program in both individual and group contexts;
  • Collaborating with the Principal and STEAM Academy staff to uphold consistent disciplinary measures in accordance with the school’s code of conduct and restorative justice practices;

Supervisory & Safety Responsibilities

  • Executing supervisory duties assigned by the Principal, including classroom, extracurricular, break, or lunchtime supervision, as well as off-campus excursions;
  • Ensuring the classroom or teaching area is prepared for students at least fifteen minutes prior to the start of classes in the morning and, where applicable, five minutes before afternoon classes;
  • Implementing all necessary safety protocols for courses and activities under the Teacher's responsibility, including fire safety, lockdown procedures, and other specific safety measures;

Community Engagement

  • Integrating technology, hands-on experiences, and Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and resources to enhance curriculum and instruction;

Administrative Duties

  • Maintaining accurate student attendance records as mandated by the Ministry of Education and STEAM Academy administrative policies;
  • Performing other related duties as necessary.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or Bachelor of Education degree;
  • OCT (Ontario Teaching Certification) in good standing;
  • Experience with D2L and Microsoft TEAMS.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity with STEM/STEAM pathways;
  • Awareness of current research and best instructional practices;
  • Strong leadership capabilities;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Hodinǫshǫ:nih history, culture, values, contemporary issues, community priorities, and stakeholders;
  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in written expression (i.e., impeccable spelling and grammar, and professional tone);
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including communication, organization, negotiation, and professional judgment;
  • Ability to perform under pressure and manage schedules, portfolios, and timelines to meet strict deadlines;
  • Capacity to work independently and collaboratively, embodying Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga'nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind);
  • Proficiency in standard desktop applications, including spreadsheets, word processing, and database software, on the Windows 2010 (or later) operating system.

Criminal Record Check

The Temporary Educator will be required to submit an original Criminal Background check – vulnerable sector screening that meets the standards of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to commencing work at the STEAM Academy and every three years thereafter, along with an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by August 31 each year during their employment with Six Nations Polytechnic.
