Job Overview

CNPS Railway Protection Specialists are entrusted with the authority to oversee offenses occurring on railway properties. As part of an international policing organization, CNPS is accountable for safeguarding all CN assets and locations spanning over 32,000 kilometers of railway in eight provinces and one territory across Canada, as well as in 16 states.

The primary role of the Railway Safety Officer involves ensuring the safety of CN's personnel, operations, and reputation. This is achieved through proactive engagement, educational initiatives, and enforcement strategies aimed at enhancing public awareness of rail safety, preventing train-related accidents, deterring theft, and ultimately saving lives. The incumbent will also conduct safety training sessions for CN employees, local emergency responders, and community members.

Key Responsibilities
  • Mitigate railway crossing and pedestrian accidents to ensure operational efficiency and save lives through proactive strategies and targeted enforcement based on data analysis.

Education and Outreach
  • Deliver rail safety training to internal CN staff, local emergency responders, and community groups.
  • Facilitate rail safety presentations tailored to diverse audiences.
Partnership Development

Foster professional relationships with various stakeholders to enhance the protection of CN's personnel, operations, and reputation.

Working Conditions
  • Work may involve outdoor environments, including adverse weather conditions.
  • Availability for shifts, weekends, and holidays based on operational requirements.
  • On-call duties may be necessary to respond to critical incidents.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage stress effectively.
  • Travel across a wide geographical area may be required based on operational needs.
Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited police academy or the ability to graduate.
  • Certification or eligibility for certification in first aid and CPR.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with appropriate classifications.
  • Residence within a specified distance from the assigned detachment.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills and positive interactions with other departments and law enforcement agencies.
  • Exhibit sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to work autonomously.
  • Make informed and timely decisions to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to work independently for extended periods.
  • Fluency in both written and verbal communication in English and French is desirable, depending on the position.
Training

The selected candidate will undergo on-the-job training with a mentor officer, alongside regular training in firearms, use of force, and scenario-based exercises. Candidates lacking certification from an accredited police academy will be required to complete a designated training program.
