Position Overview:

The role of a Highway Maintenance Worker/Operator involves the proficient operation of diverse heavy machinery utilized in highway upkeep tasks. This position is accountable for the maintenance of highways, the operation of equipment, and undertaking physically demanding tasks to ensure the Highway Maintenance Program adheres to contractual obligations.

Equipment Management:

Highway Maintenance and Emergency Response:
  • Ensure proper signage and traffic control measures are implemented.
  • Respond to emergencies such as adverse weather, wildlife encounters, and accidents as outlined in training modules and specifications.
Operational Duties:
  • Operate machinery and perform labor-intensive tasks related to snow and ice management, roadside upkeep, road surface maintenance, traffic control, bridge maintenance, and overall highway maintenance.
  • Conduct inspections, maintenance, and operation of equipment to meet company standards, promptly reporting any issues.
  • Ensure the security of vehicles, equipment, facilities, and keys in accordance with company policies.
Documentation and Compliance:
  • Demonstrate versatility in operating various heavy machinery and a willingness to learn.
  • Complete necessary documentation including fuel logs, schedules, road reports, maintenance records, and safety documentation.
  • Comply with the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) standards relevant to maintenance facilities.
  • Conduct operations in an environmentally responsible manner, adhering to safety policies and regulations.
  • Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials as required by the job.
Seasonal Work Conditions:
  • Be prepared for extended hours and continuous service during winter.
  • Be available for significant shift work, including on-call and night shifts.
  • Manage poor visibility conditions while operating equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate work shifts and on-call schedules.
Safety Protocols:
  • Conduct all work operations safely and responsibly, following Alberta OH&S Regulations.
  • Take corrective action when safety procedures are not adhered to.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Valid Class 1 (preferred) or Class 3 driver's license with air endorsement.
  • Clean and valid driver's abstract.
  • Minimum of 50 hours of experience operating snowplows.
  • Experience and skills in operating and performing minor maintenance on various equipment.
  • Ability to handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate (preferred).
  • Must reside within a reasonable distance from the assigned maintenance facility.
