Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory and X-Ray Technologist to join our team at PHSA. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of laboratory tests and procedures, including hematology, coagulation, and chemistry tests.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform daily routine duties in both laboratory and X-ray departments, including quality control, patient sample processing, and equipment maintenance.
  • Work on hematology, coagulation, and chemistry benches, and perform daily quality control as required.
  • Run patient samples and reports, receive blood components and products, and transport them as needed.
  • Assign and dispense uncross-matched red cells, albumin, RHIG, IVIG, plasma, and cross-matched red cells.
  • Quarantine and discard blood products, and pool/reconstitute purified plasma products.
  • Perform inpatient and outpatient phlebotomies, and document and monitor internal and external quality control.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs, and perform equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Provide on-call services as required, and carry out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technology Program.
  • Eligibility for registration with a provincial licensing body.
  • Completion of the NAIT TRAM 101 Course, or minimum one year recent, related experience or program/curriculum-based instruction in transfusion medicine or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated recent working knowledge of the assigned section or sections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures, and technical competence to perform tests used in the assigned section of the laboratory, including quality control and safety.
  • Basic awareness of research process.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Basic knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care using point of care instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment and software, including techniques appropriate to the designated area of the laboratory.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.
  • Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities of settler colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and familiarity with addressing Indigenous-specific anti-racism, anti-racism, and Indigenous Cultural Safety and foundational documents and legislative commitments.
