Role Overview

The Mechanical Design Specialist is responsible for creating detailed schematics using CAD/CAM tools throughout various phases, from proposal preparation to factory production and on-site assembly. Collaboration with engineers is crucial during the design phase for heavy mechanical apparatus such as dam gates and hoists.

This position is based at the ANDRITZ office in Boucherville, with a hybrid work model (3 days in the office and 2 days remote). Occasional travel to hydroelectric facilities across Canada may be necessary.

  • Gather necessary information to develop concepts by reviewing specifications, existing plans, or current designs;
  • Research and select components for design implementation;
  • Create and refine 3D models based on initial concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, and specifications;
  • Prepare comprehensive drawings for heavy mechanical equipment, including tender, shop, site, and factory assembly drawings;
  • Collaborate with engineers throughout the design process;
  • Assist engineers with detailed design tasks utilizing CAD/CAM tools;
  • Select components for heavy mechanical assembly;
  • Ensure compliance of plans with existing guidelines, codes, and regulations;
  • Adhere to project deadlines;
  • Confirm feasibility of concepts and drawings in relation to company requirements and manufacturing processes;
  • Determine necessary dimensional tolerances for production;
  • Compile material lists from drawings;
  • Address inquiries and requests for clarification from various stakeholders;
  • Define functional dimensioning and geometric tolerancing for components;
  • Participate in team meetings;
  • Verify drawings against customer specifications and design data;
  • Perform additional related tasks as required.

  • Diploma of College Studies (DCS) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent;
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience;
  • Proficient in SolidWorks;
  • Strong attention to quality and detail;
  • Excellent analytical and concentration abilities;
  • Proactive mindset;
  • Fluent in written and spoken French;
  • Functional proficiency in written and spoken English;
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively;
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Inventor is an asset;
  • Knowledge of welding and machining is a plus;
  • Experience in heavy mechanical equipment design is advantageous;
  • Background in hydroelectricity is beneficial.
