Job Summary

Vancouver Coastal Health is seeking a skilled Substance Use Outreach Clinician to join our team in Squamish. As a key member of our Aftercare Clinicians team, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with substance use and mental health presentations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a strengths-based outreach model that incorporates harm reduction approaches to support client goals, including detoxification, stabilization, treatment, and recovery programming.
  • Provide education, group facilitation, and case management services to clients across the transtheoretical model of change.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with clients, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and community resources to facilitate clients' wellness journeys.
  • Participate in committees and meetings, engage in ongoing team planning, development, and quality improvement activities, and maintain and update own knowledge.
  • Provide direct clinical services, including immediate assessment, intervention, referral, and support to clients in urgent situations.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and other caregivers to identify and resolve client care issues, ethical dilemmas, and coordinate and integrate care.
  • Act as a client advocate, supporting clients' recovery goals, including building recovery capital, developing, coordinating, and delivering evidence-based treatment and interventions.
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a health science discipline from a recognized program.
  • Two (2) years' recent experience practicing in community-based or Indigenous-led or First Nations organizations working with individuals with substance use and mental health presentations; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Valid driver's license. Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle for which mileage reimbursement will be paid.
  • Pursuant to Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code, preference will be given to candidates who identify as Indigenous, including First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of substance-use recovery services in the community and across British Columbia.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of health inequities and discrimination faced by designated client populations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of harm reduction in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of strengths-based, client-centered approaches and ability to incorporate into practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of traditional healing practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of trauma-informed practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of substance-use recovery models.
  • Knowledge of the principles of recovery in mental illness.
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation methodology.
  • Broad knowledge of clinical theory and counseling skills (individual and group-based).
  • Broad knowledge of mental illness and treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of substance use and addictions treatment.
  • Broad knowledge of psychopharmacology (indications and side effects).
  • Broad knowledge of psychoeducation principles and methods.
  • Broad knowledge of other facilities and community resources.
  • Broad knowledge of legislation and government policies and procedures that relate to client care, including the BC Mental Health Act.
  • Knowledge of DSM-IV Diagnostic Classification System, mental status examination, and case formulation.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct mental health and addictions assessments and provide treatment planning and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with colleagues, clients, and their families, students, and service providers in health and social services.
  • Demonstrated de-escalation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to manage aggressive and suicidal behavior.
  • Ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Ability to conduct a risk assessment and respond appropriately.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate a computerized client care information system and word processing, spreadsheet, Internet, and email software.
