The Provincial Preschool Autism Service (PPAS) is a collaborative initiative involving IWK Health, Nova Scotia Health, Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia, and Autism Nova Scotia. Following a comprehensive review and community engagement, autism services in Nova Scotia are transitioning to a needs-based model tailored to the unique requirements of children and their families.
Reporting to the Manager of Provincial Preschool Autism Services, the Clinical Psychologist will be responsible for conducting clinical diagnostic assessments for children suspected of having autism. This role will cater to both preschool and school-aged children.
To enhance access to autism assessments across the province, the Psychologist will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, evidence-based assessment services to children and their families. All psychologists will collaborate as part of a broader provincial team to support autism diagnostics and work within an integrated service delivery model for the Provincial Preschool Autism Service.
Depending on expertise and experience, the psychologist will engage with various teams to provide direct, consultative, or collaborative services with interprofessional autism intervention teams and families, focusing on foundational education, caregiver coaching, care coordination, and transition to school-based intervention services.
We invite applications from individuals who are registered or eligible for registration with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology. For candidates with a Master's degree, a minimum of three years of pediatric work experience is required. For those with a PhD, this includes at least one year of post-doctoral supervision, one year of full-time pre-doctoral residency in a relevant area, and a minimum of two years of relevant pediatric work experience.
Key competencies include:
- Understanding typical child development and divergent neurodevelopment
- Recognizing the behavioral manifestations of Autism and associated conditions
- Knowledge of relevant health conditions impacting autism diagnosis
- Assessing the influence of social, familial, and environmental factors on development
The ability to formulate a relevant management plan with families, considering identified strengths and challenges, as well as the family's priorities and available resources, is essential. Experience with standard autism assessment tools, particularly the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-2 (ADOS-2), and knowledge of evidence-based autism intervention techniques are preferred.
In cases where no qualified candidates meet the minimum pediatric work experience requirements, consideration may be given to Registered Master's Psychologists and PhD Psychologists without experience.
Please note that only applicants selected for interview/testing will be contacted. This position is part of a Healthcare bargaining unit.
