Role Overview

The Dentistry and Oral Surgery department is seeking a skilled Registered Veterinary Technologist or an out-of-province Registered Veterinary Technician to enhance our Dentistry & Oral Surgery Service. The selected individual will play a crucial role in providing exceptional specialist care to our patients, clients, and referring veterinarians. This position involves direct collaboration with Dr. Campbell, a Board Certified Specialist in Dentistry & Oral Surgery.

Dr. Campbell and the team are recognized as a leading center for oral and maxillofacial trauma in southern Alberta, frequently collaborating with the Critical Care and Emergency Service to ensure optimal patient care. Our services include specialist referral dentistry, covering routine and complex exodontics, endodontics, and orthodontics. The dentistry and oral surgery department also acts as a primary referral hub for oral and maxillofacial surgical oncology, working closely with the Oncology Team to deliver comprehensive care to cancer patients. We address various conditions, including salivary gland disease and oral medicine, and perform advanced imaging in the head and neck. Each day presents unique challenges and opportunities to develop your skills within the dentistry and oral surgery services. Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering and/or monitoring general anesthesia (CRI), with advanced technical skills; full-time anesthesiology support will be available.
  • Experience with small animal veterinary ventilators is advantageous.
  • Conducting patient treatment processes, including initiating client appointments, collecting and processing blood samples, and fulfilling other duties as required.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely patient records.
  • Familiarity with dental radiographs, dental charting, and dental hygiene procedures is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Providing general pre/post-operative assistance.
  • Performing general housekeeping duties.
  • Supporting student training by offering practicum assistance.
  • Participating in career fairs as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of an accredited veterinary program; Veterinary Technology Diploma, Veterinary Technician Diploma, or Animal Health Technology Diploma.
  • VTNE completion or eligibility.
  • Ideally, a minimum of 2 years of experience in a dentistry department or general practice with relevant dental procedures.
  • Eligibility for registration with AAAHT in Alberta.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with various teams within the hospital.
  • Adaptability to recognize and respond to diverse situations, appointments, and procedures while supporting specialists and other teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Work Schedule

  • A 4 days on, 4 days off schedule that promotes work-life balance, including a combination of 4-hour shifts from Monday to Thursday.
  • All RVTs are expected to rotate on-call for weekend and evening emergency coverage.
