Objective

In the context of advancing transport initiatives within the Intercity & Heavy Rail Business Unit, the Senior Electrical Engineer – Transport is tasked with overseeing the electrical design processes associated with transport infrastructure projects. This role serves as the technical authority in the domain of energy management, representing the organization in discussions with clients. The engineer is accountable for the execution of project components under their purview, ensuring adherence to production timelines and budgetary constraints.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, evaluation, quality assurance, and compliance of power and traction system deliverables for railway initiatives.
  • Conduct specialized studies relevant to their field.
  • Assume responsibility for the integrity of input data.
  • Identify project limitations, including access points and environmental factors.
  • Create power diagrams, including equipment layouts and low-voltage distribution sizing.
  • Compile a preliminary list of necessary equipment for all proposed work.
  • Prepare calculation documentation, including balance sheets and distribution analyses.
  • Establish initial study and work timelines.
  • Estimate installation and project costs.
  • Detail and justify operational methodologies employed in the project.
  • Adhere to established design principles and reference frameworks.
  • Manage technical interactions with other disciplines.
  • Engage in technical progress discussions.
  • Uphold objectives and protocols regarding timelines, costs, safety, and quality.
  • Contribute to the formulation of internal budgets, recognize program changes, and assist in impact assessments in collaboration with the Project Studies Coordinator.
  • Participate in operational results evaluations.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

Experience: Over 15 years in a comparable position, with at least 10 years focused on power and distribution system design.

Technical Skills:

  • Membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) and/or the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO), or eligibility for membership.
  • Expertise in AC high voltage and/or DC low voltage railway electrification systems, or familiarity with related medium and high voltage systems in alternative sectors.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical switchgear, transformers, transformer stations, and protective relays.
  • In-depth knowledge of high and low voltage electrical distribution frameworks.
  • Familiarity with substations and services, including emergency power and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems.
  • Capability to perform detailed calculations, technical drawings, specifications, procurement documents, and design packages for substation equipment, cabling, grounding, and bonding.
