The Senior Medical Director is pivotal in seamlessly integrating essential elements of a multifaceted and comprehensive healthcare system. Reporting directly to the Vice-President of Medicine and Quality as well as the Chief Medical Executive, and collaborating closely with the Executive Director, this role is jointly accountable for the overarching leadership and strategic direction of all clinical programs and services within the designated macro geographic area.
This position guarantees optimal patient care and outcomes consistent with the vision, mission, and values of Island Health. It is responsible for the effective and client-centered delivery of health and clinical services, providing guidance and support to program teams to address challenges that span across program and portfolio boundaries. This will be executed within the context of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.
The Senior Medical Director engages in physician resource planning, academic development, and research initiatives, while also fostering strategic relationships with external organizations and stakeholders, including educational institutions and regulatory bodies.
Portfolio: Nanaimo, Oceanside, Patient Flow, and Regional Cancer Care
Key Responsibilities:- Collaborates with the Executive Director to ensure strategic and operational planning within clinical programs that prioritize a patient/client-centered approach, anticipating and adapting to shifts in services and healthcare system changes.
- Ensures that patient care activities are structured to promote coordination, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and high-quality patient care outcomes in conjunction with the Executive Director.
- Guarantees that all health services meet or surpass standards set by Island Health and/or relevant professional organizations regarding quality and performance.
- Oversees the organization and effectiveness of local medical staff while supporting the development and operations of the portfolio.
- Implements key quality, satisfaction, and system improvement initiatives, including utilization management systems.
- Executes assigned components of the physician resource management plan to ensure necessary and appropriate service continuity, including recruitment, retention, deployment, performance standards, and practice models.
- Participates in the establishment, monitoring, and allocation of financial targets.
- Collaborates with other Senior Medical Directors to ensure service integration.
- Encourages the development, acquisition, and dissemination of knowledge within the organization.
- Monitors and ensures compliance with ethical and legal standards, accreditation requirements, and Provincial and Federal regulations.
- Works in partnership with the medical staff organization and the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee to develop and promote medical standards, education, and research initiatives.
- Identifies emerging issues at local, Provincial, Federal, and International levels that may impact care delivery within Island Health. Keeps abreast of best practices and benchmarking within the industry, regionally and nationally, to support organizational decision-making.
- Provides leadership to team members through mentoring, coaching, and exemplifying key behaviors.
- Supports the Island Medical Program (IMP) and collaborates with representatives from educational institutions.
- Acts as a spokesperson for Island Health on specific portfolio matters.
- Offers formal and informal insights to Committees of the Board as a member of the Senior Management Team.
- Engages in the activities of the Health Authority Medical Advisory Committee.
- Performs additional related duties as assigned.
