1ST STEP: $87,960.60 per annum

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Under the supervision of the Manager, Environmental Planning, this role is responsible for delivering project management expertise related to significant policy planning initiatives aimed at enhancing the City's environmental protection, resource management, and sustainability strategies for both natural and constructed environments. Additionally, the position involves guiding the work of cooperative students and volunteers.

  • Assist in the development of specialized studies and reports addressing a broad spectrum of sustainability and natural heritage issues alongside other policy planning challenges.
  • Oversee the tracking and reporting of the Brampton Grow Green Environmental Master Plan (EMP) and the Natural Heritage and Environmental Management Strategy (NHEMS).
  • Provide technical guidance on development planning applications by reviewing comprehensive environmental studies to ensure alignment with Federal, Provincial, and Regional policies concerning land use planning.
  • Collaborate with City and Regional departments, various levels of government, and external agencies, including conservation authorities involved in environmental planning.
  • Offer professional planning advice to other City Departments, the public, developers, and City Council regarding environmental policies and procedures, particularly on natural heritage and sustainability matters.
  • Contribute to the formulation of sustainability and natural heritage policies for integration into the Official Plan, Secondary Plans, and Official Plan Amendments.
  • Identify challenges and issues, supporting the creation of procedures to address them effectively.
  • Develop and maintain databases, mapping, and communication materials related to land use planning, including natural areas inventory and restoration efforts.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental recommendations, decisions, and actions within the framework of Provincial planning legislation, Regional and City Plans, and regulatory approvals.
  • Conduct field assessments of development sites and municipal natural heritage systems to ascertain the boundaries of natural heritage features and areas.
  • Provide expert testimony in Provincial Court regarding municipal conservation bylaws and at the Ontario Municipal Board concerning environmental planning policy and applications.
  • Assist in designing and posting information on the City's internal portal and external website on behalf of the section.
  • Perform additional similar and related duties as assigned.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
  • High School (Grade 12) plus an additional program of three (3) to four (4) years in Planning, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Environmental Sciences or equivalent.
  • Over two (2) years, up to and including four (4) years of planning experience with an environmental focus.
  • Eligible for Candidate (provisional) membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute (OPPI).
  • Experience with Greenhouse gas/energy projects an asset.
  • Valid non-probationary Ontario class G driver's licence.
  • Knowledge of provincial and municipal environmental and planning policy and legislation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service, including negotiation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated public relations skills and able to effectively deal with third party agencies.
