Job Overview

The Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusionist plays a crucial role in the surgical team, specifically during open-heart procedures. Under the guidance of the Supervisor/Clinical Instructor, this professional is responsible for the selection, setup, maintenance, and operation of extracorporeal circulation equipment throughout surgical interventions.

Close monitoring of the patient's circulatory changes is essential, with timely corrective actions taken when irregularities occur. The perfusionist ensures that both the surgeon and anesthesiologist are kept informed of the patient's status.

In addition to managing the heart-lung machine, the Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusionist also supports various medical specialties by operating mechanical devices that aid in blood conservation during surgical procedures.

Utilizing a platelet separator, the perfusionist processes autologous blood to create topical blood products, which are vital for achieving hemostasis and promoting wound healing.

Furthermore, this role extends beyond the operating room, providing long-term circulatory support through devices such as ventricular assist devices (VAD), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), and extracorporeal life support systems (ECLS).


Qualifications and Skills

Candidates must have graduated from an accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion technology program, along with a minimum of one year of relevant experience, or possess an equivalent combination of education and training.

Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Society of Cardiovascular Perfusionists (C.S.C.P.) and/or certification from the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion is required.

Responsibilities

The Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusionist is tasked with:

  • Selecting and assembling perfusion equipment, including heart-lung machines and related devices during surgical and emergency situations.
  • Setting up auto transfusion systems for salvaging and processing the patient's blood products.
  • Preparing and operating autologous platelet separation systems for both surgical and non-surgical applications.
  • Monitoring blood flows and pressures, interpreting blood gas analyses, and adjusting as necessary.
  • Conducting physiological measurements and calculations.
  • Administering various solutions and medical gases under medical supervision.
  • Engaging in research projects and modifying equipment and procedures as needed.
  • Evaluating new technologies and establishing policies for optimal patient care.
  • Maintaining and repairing perfusion and related equipment, ensuring quality assurance logs are kept.
  • Providing training and demonstrations on perfusion techniques to medical staff.
  • Conducting regular reviews of emergency practices to maintain clinical proficiency.
  • Ordering necessary medical supplies and fulfilling call duties as scheduled.
  • Performing additional related duties as assigned.
