Job Summary:

The Vancouver Aquarium is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Registered Veterinary Technician to join our team in the Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Centre. As a key member of our veterinary team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care and support to our marine mammal patients, including assisting with daily routine and non-routine veterinary treatments and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians with daily routine and non-routine veterinary treatments and procedures, including emergency care for critical patients.
  • Implement treatment protocols, prepare and administer medications, and maintain accurate records.
  • Provide training and supervision to volunteers, students, and veterinary externs.
  • Assist with diagnostic imaging, clinical pathology, and diagnostic sampling.
  • Participate in research programs, including collection, processing, and storage of samples.
  • Prepare prescriptions, dispense, and administer medication, ensuring quality control.
  • Provide education and information to the public as required.
  • Assist with the supervision and training of volunteers and practicum students.
  • Participate in the preparation of animals for release, including tagging and microchipping.
  • Assimilate, record, and manage data, maintaining detailed administrative records.
  • Communicate with veterinarians and remotely apply medical treatment plans.
  • Maintain organizational safety standards and ensure compliance with regulations.

Requirements:

  • Veterinary Technologist or Veterinary Technician Diploma/Degree.
  • Proof of current registration status with a local VT Association.
  • Essential knowledge in marine mammal anatomy and physiology.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Previous experience with wildlife or marine mammal species preferred.

Skills:

  • Excellent animal handling, husbandry, and technical skills.
  • Excellent computer skills with respect to data entry, Word, and Excel.
  • Able to work efficiently without supervision.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Able to be flexible with scheduling and availability.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to think quickly under pressure and high stress.
  • Ability to complete tasks and make sound decisions.
  • Enthusiastic team player, effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to keep on task with strategic items while managing day-to-day responsibilities.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to animal bites, pathogens, and chemicals.
  • Job requires high degree of alertness to changing conditions when working with animals.
  • Requires standing for periods of time.
  • Requires working rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and potential for overnight shifts.
  • Exposure to slippery conditions and uneven surfaces.
  • Required to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to safely lift 20kgs.
