Job Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Sessional Lecturer to teach and lead a course in Introduction to Databases at the University of Toronto. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering lectures, maintaining course administration, and providing support to students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Course Delivery: Deliver lectures in-person on campus as scheduled, and ensure that tutorials and/or labs are delivered appropriately by teaching assistants.
  • Course Administration: Maintain course administration, including course website, marking schemes, lectures, tutorials, assignments, tests, and final assessments.
  • Student Support: Provide appropriate contact time outside of class to students, through office hours, email, and the course website.
  • Teaching Assistant Supervision: Prepare the breakdown of hours for teaching assistant duties in the course and supervise the teaching assistants.
  • Grading and Assessment: Manage the grading for the course, which is largely done by teaching assistants, and carry out any grading not handled by the teaching assistants.
  • Final Exam Invigilation: Invigilate the final exam if applicable.
  • Coordination with Other Instructors: Coordinate with other instructors to maintain consistency, including using common assignments and a common final exam.
  • Grade Management: Manage the grades and submit final course grades, including the timely completion and release of grades and feedback to students throughout the term.
Requirements
  • Graduate Degree: A graduate degree in Computer Science or a closely related field is required.
  • Teaching Experience: Teaching experience at the university level or equivalent industry level is required.
  • Organizational and Communication Skills: Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required.
  • Expertise in Topic Area: Demonstrated expertise in the topic area of the course is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous Teaching Experience: Previous experience teaching undergraduate courses in the field of Computer Science is preferred.
  • Teaching Excellence: Demonstrated evidence of excellence in teaching is preferred.
