Course Title: Intercultural Contacts and Hybrid Identities in Spanish America
Course Description:
This course explores the cultural dynamics of contact and exchange between different cultures in the Americas, from the colonial period to the present day. We will examine the ways in which cultural identities are shaped and negotiated through literature, art, and other forms of cultural expression.
Course Objectives:
- To understand the historical and cultural contexts of intercultural contact in the Americas
- To analyze the ways in which cultural identities are constructed and negotiated through literature and art
- To develop critical thinking and writing skills through the analysis of primary and secondary sources
Course Outline:
The course will be divided into several modules, each focusing on a different aspect of intercultural contact and hybridity. These may include:
- The colonial period and the construction of cultural identities
- The role of literature and art in shaping cultural identities
- The impact of globalization on cultural identities
Assessment:
Students will be assessed through a combination of written assignments, class participation, and a final research paper. The written assignments will include:
- A critical analysis of a primary source related to intercultural contact
- A research paper on a topic related to intercultural contact and hybridity
Prerequisites:
Master's degree and advanced doctoral studies in Hispanic studies, or equivalent, required. Experience in university teaching. Trilingual: French, English, and Spanish. Areas of expertise: cinema, cultures, and literatures of the Spanish-speaking world. Topics of expertise: social tensions and conflicts related to issues such as colonization, resistance and cultural appropriation, mestizaje, cultural hybridization, etc.
