POSITION OVERVIEW
The Central Heating Systems Technician is responsible for executing operational tasks within a central heating or combined heating and cooling facility. This role involves providing essential services to government entities at various facilities. BGIS aims to deliver certified and skilled technicians to oversee, operate, and maintain a variety of registered heating and cooling systems.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate plant machinery and systems during scheduled shifts; monitor instruments, gauges, and computerized data; initiate and terminate equipment operations manually and via computer; adhere to regulations and standards; inspect operational conditions and report any issues; respond to system alarms; conduct inspections and verify equipment functionality; assist in the procurement of parts and supplies.
- Carry out routine preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, and overhauls of plant machinery; utilize hand and power tools; diagnose and rectify issues within the plant and distribution network; maintain and repair equipment; identify necessary repair components; guide tradespeople in troubleshooting; and supervise contractors within the facility.
- Maintain a shift log; monitor and document instrument, gauge, and meter readings; perform calculations related to resource consumption; compile reports for management addressing operational concerns or deficiencies.
- Conduct scheduled performance tests on the diesel electric generator; document test outcomes and the unit's condition; perform standardized water quality tests and adjust chemical feed rates accordingly.
- Investigate reported issues and take necessary actions to ensure the safety and security of the facility and personnel; prepare incident reports; perform housekeeping tasks and participate in safety monitoring as part of a team.
- The technician is accountable for a range of heating plant equipment and systems, including: diesel electric generators, control systems, instruments and gauges, output regulation controls, distribution systems, high-pressure boilers, combustion chambers, firing equipment, water pumps, valves, expansion joints, fans, hand and power tools, and water samples.
- Responsibilities include maintaining a shift log that details operational conditions and safety matters.
- The technician is required to conduct inspections, record observations, and ensure compliance with regulations, operational procedures, and health and safety standards.
- The technician interprets operational data for colleagues, clients, and supervisors regarding issues, deficiencies, or changes in normal operations and new equipment; communicates instructions received from supervisors or colleagues regarding inspections and repairs.
- The technician troubleshoots mechanical issues, employing creativity to devise solutions to equipment failures. These actions are critical in preventing damage to the facility and equipment, reducing operational costs, and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery.
- Recommendations for purchasing parts and supplies are also part of the technician's responsibilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Extensive knowledge of heating and cooling plant operations and systems, including familiarity with the characteristics of boilers, chillers, generators, combustion chambers, and auxiliary equipment. This expertise is essential for delivering safe and continuous temperature control to meet client requirements and for obtaining necessary operating certifications.
- Proficiency in testing methods for mechanical equipment and water samples to ensure reliability and adjust chemical concentrations.
- Understanding of administrative practices for preparing work orders, compiling operational data for reports, and drafting recommendations.
- General knowledge of federal and provincial regulations concerning environmental standards and occupational health and safety in plant operations.
- Skills to operate large oil and gas-fired boilers and generators, adjust output controls, perform preventive maintenance, and occasionally replace parts.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting activities.
- Familiarity with various computer software applications.
- Skills in conducting standardized tests for determining chemical concentrations in water.
- Manual dexterity for repairing and overhauling plant equipment and extensive distribution systems.
- Proficient use of hand and power tools in daily tasks.
- Effective written communication skills for maintaining shift logs and preparing reports, along with verbal communication skills for discussing mechanical issues with colleagues.
