We are seeking a Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse to provide essential care and support to individuals facing mental health challenges and substance use issues.
Vancouver Coastal Health is in search of a Registered Nurse OR Registered Psychiatric Nurse to contribute to the Psychiatry In Patient unit. This role is vital in delivering comprehensive nursing care.
Responsibilities of the Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse include:
Deliver tailored nursing care, case management, and discharge planning for clients with severe mental health conditions, concurrent disorders, and dementia, ensuring a holistic approach to rehabilitation. Improve the quality of life from the client and family perspective. Conduct thorough physical and psychosocial assessments. Collaborate with healthcare professionals and family members to create, implement, assess, and adjust personalized treatment plans. Build and maintain therapeutic relationships grounded in respect and understanding. Administer prescribed medications, monitor client reactions, and provide ongoing education to clients and families regarding daily living activities, medication usage, side effects, and lifestyle integration. Maintain accurate client records, participate in team meetings, engage in quality improvement initiatives, and continuously update professional knowledge.Relocation Assistance may be available. Qualifications
Education & Experience
Current registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Completion of a minimum of 6 weeks or 240 hours of clinical practicum in a mental health environment, complemented by relevant coursework or equivalent education and experience.Knowledge & Skills
In-depth understanding of concurrent disorders, substance use, harm reduction strategies, and assessment/intervention techniques. Familiarity with psychiatric care principles, including person-centered care, trauma-informed practices, and recovery-oriented approaches. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its implications for clients and staff. Awareness of community, social, and mental health resources. Understanding of the impact of social, cultural, and familial systems on health outcomes. Ability to conduct nursing assessments and interventions, including group facilitation, conflict resolution, and counseling. Capability to develop and implement care plans while anticipating and addressing potential complications. Skill in creating educational programs and materials for clients and families based on best practices. Proficiency in identifying and addressing emotional, social, or environmental barriers to care. Competence in documenting client care accurately and timely in accordance with organizational standards. Experience in managing conflict and aggressive behavior using non-violent crisis intervention techniques. Ability to mentor and guide new staff and students. Proficiency in clinical techniques and the use of relevant equipment.Closing Statement
