Mechanical Operations Leadership Trainee
Company Overview:
Canadian Pacific (CP) and Kansas City Southern (KCS) have united to form CPKC, the only truly North American railway. Our extensive 20,000-mile network is vital for transporting essential goods, fostering economic growth across Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. We invite you to explore the CPKC advantage, our mission, and our culture.
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Mechanical Leadership Management Trainee (LMT-M) program is designed to equip new trainees with the leadership abilities, industry insights, and technical expertise necessary to thrive as mechanical supervisors within CPKC's extensive network. This program lays a robust foundation in railroading, providing essential support and skills to maintain the reliability of our rail infrastructure.
Training Program Overview:
This comprehensive seven-month training initiative encompasses classroom learning, online modules, workshops, projects, and hands-on training. Trainees will engage in an 11-week manager conductor training course, followed by 16 weeks focused on mastering the competencies essential for overseeing safe mechanical operations, including mechanical bad order processes, cycle times, and dwell times. The curriculum includes leadership training, safety protocols, and an introduction to CPKC's precision scheduled railroading model, alongside computer systems training and exposure to key departments within the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Rapidly acquire and apply knowledge of mechanical bad order processes, cycle times, dwell times, and productivity metrics to effectively manage mechanical operations teams.
- Act as a safety champion by actively observing compliance with regulations and implementing preventive measures through team engagement.
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills to guide mechanical operations personnel.
- Exemplify key leadership competencies: drive for results, lead others, inspire innovation, and set a positive example.
- Prioritize tasks effectively, making decisions aligned with CPKC's core values of accountability, diversity, and pride, while adhering to foundational principles: operate safely, develop talent, manage costs, optimize resources, and deliver exceptional service.
- Successfully complete the management train conductor certification to qualify for deployment as business needs arise; failure to pass will result in removal from the program.
- Meet all requirements of the LMT program, achieving minimum standards on assessments and completing all assignments on time.
- Exhibit mechanical operational capabilities for potential career advancement.
- A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory; candidates with post-secondary education in a technical field are preferred.
- 1-2 years of supervisory experience in sectors such as transportation, construction, logistics, oil and gas, military, airlines, mining, or manufacturing is advantageous.
- Previous railway experience in a mechanical foreman capacity is a plus.
- A valid driver's license is essential.
- Willingness to travel extensively; training may occur in various locations.
- Preference will be given to candidates open to relocation within CPKC's network.
- Availability for 24/7 shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
- Ability to work in diverse weather conditions.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary for effectively conveying CPKC policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
- Ability to build trust and credibility in new environments and foster strong relationships across the organization.
- Proven time management abilities and excellent communication skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities and work conditions.
- Demonstrated leadership presence with a commitment to career growth.
- Flexible and competitive benefits package.
- Attractive company pension plan.
- Employee Share Purchase Plan.
- Performance Incentive Program.
- Annual Fitness Subsidy.
- Part-time Studies Program.
Relocation: As a North American employer, your position may be relocated based on organizational needs.
Training Program Location: Most training will occur in Calgary, Alberta, with some on-the-job training required in various provinces or territories across CPKC's network.
Medical Requirements: Safety is a core value at CPKC. All new hires for safety-critical roles must complete a pre-employment medical assessment, including physical, vision, hearing, and drug testing.
Background Investigation:
- Successful candidates will undergo the following clearances:
- Criminal history check.
- Reference verification.
- Education confirmation.
