Global Student Academic Consultant

Reporting to the Manager of International Student Services, the International Student Academic Advisor is primarily tasked with providing academic guidance, immigration support for educational pursuits, and facilitating credit transfer evaluations for students from abroad, all within the framework of established College policies.
Collaboration with various schools and departments within the Education and Student Services Division is a critical component of this role.
External collaboration with other post-secondary institutions and government entities may also be required on an as-needed basis. Occasional travel between campuses and extended hours during peak periods may be necessary.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic and Educational Guidance for International Students
- Acts as the primary contact to assist students in developing educational plans that align with their academic and career aspirations;
- Encourages the utilization of advising and career exploration resources, referring students to counselors when necessary;
- Aids students in navigating various online educational planning platforms;
- Identifies the need for assessment testing and integrates placement decisions into educational plans, including recommendations for upgrading as needed.
- Reviews student transcripts to advise on the feasibility of credit transfers to Camosun College programs;
- Communicates with admissions offices at Canadian postsecondary institutions regarding the transfer processes for international students;
- Provides students with accurate and current information about programs, courses, and services available at the College and other institutions;
- Assesses students' graduation status and offers feedback on their progression towards graduation.
Immigration Support for Academic Pursuits
- Supplies relevant and up-to-date immigration information pertinent to students' academic endeavors at the College;
- Prepares and submits compliance reports to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as mandated;
- Addresses inquiries from IRCC and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) regarding students' enrollment status;
- Serves as a resource for the College on matters related to international student immigration;
- Engages with Canadian immigration officials to clarify regulations and the status of applicants;
- Develops and delivers presentations to educate and support students regarding IRCC permit application requirements, including visa and immigration regulations;
- Collaborates with federal government representatives on issues concerning international student study, work, and graduate permits.
Advocacy and Support for International Students
- Monitors student progress and collaborates with the International Student Experience Advisor (ISEA) as needed;
- Recommends strategies for students facing academic challenges and provides information about related support services, including referrals;
- Conducts outreach across campuses to raise awareness of services available to international students;
- Clarifies college policies and procedures relevant to international students and Camosun International.
General Responsibilities
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of the College's programs and courses, including credit, vocational, and continuing education;
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures by identifying persistent issues and suggesting resolutions;
- Keeps abreast of the College's integrated database systems that support admissions, registration, and advising processes;
- Participates in college committees related to international education or academic advising;
- Provides information regarding international student interest in specific programs and courses upon request;
- Collaborates with other divisions and departments to ensure the needs of international students are met;
- Ensures that staff within Camosun International are informed of developments related to international students and provides guidance to ISEAs as necessary;
- Engages in relevant College committees and maintains membership in appropriate associations;
- Maintains student records, statistics, and other relevant documentation;
- Performs additional related duties as required.
Qualifications
- A Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education, or International Studies, with coursework in human development, intercultural communication, and interpersonal communication, along with Regulated International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) certification and three years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proven experience with Colleague or similar integrated student registration systems.
- Exceptional listening and communication skills, a supportive and problem-solving approach to interpersonal relations, respect for cultural diversity, patience, and the ability to communicate effectively with non-native English speakers.
- Demonstrated understanding of immigration regulations as they pertain to international students.
- Capable of working efficiently in a high-volume, time-sensitive environment with attention to detail and accuracy.
- High proficiency in both spoken and written English, along with the ability to communicate comfortably in another language, both in person and in writing.
- Proficient in the MS Office suite.
