KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactively manage clinical consultations from the Emergency Department to streamline access to surgical interventions and reduce risks associated with orthopedic trauma surgeries. Assist patients in their surgical preparations, serving as the primary liaison for escalations within care teams, while fostering collaboration among all stakeholders.
  • Improve patient satisfaction by providing consistent updates on care progress to patients and their families.
  • Act as a role model in clinical nursing practice within Orthopedics, delivering advanced assessments and comprehensive care as an extended class nurse.
  • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration through regular team meetings, serving as a vital link between patients, healthcare professionals, and physicians.
  • Collaborate with primary care providers, referral sources, and community services to ensure seamless transitions before surgery and after discharge.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, implementing monitoring tools alongside orthopedic surgeons and decision support teams, and presenting monthly findings to the clinical team.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid RN (EC) registration with the Ontario College of Nurses, along with a Nurse Practitioner certification in Acute Care or Primary Care;
  • A Master's degree in Nursing is mandatory;
  • Membership in the RNAO and the Nurse Practitioner's Association of Ontario;
  • Certification in a relevant surgical nursing specialty (Medical-Surgical/PeriAnesthesia/Orthopaedics/Perioperative) is essential, or actively pursuing certification with a commitment to complete within 18 months;
  • Proven NP experience with a minimum of 2 years in surgical nursing is required;
  • Strong expertise and experience in caring for surgical patients;
  • Understanding of hospital nursing operations, current nursing needs, and healthcare system pathways for surgical patients;
  • Demonstrated experience in adult education, health coaching, and client self-management, along with strong case management abilities;
  • Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of individuals;
  • Proven negotiation and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to work effectively within an inter-professional team;
  • Strong organizational, conceptual, and leadership capabilities, with the ability to prioritize workload effectively;
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the capacity to exercise independent judgment and address issues efficiently;
  • Self-motivated learner who actively seeks opportunities for professional development to enhance client care;
  • Commitment to a philosophy of patient and family-centered care;
  • Ability to adapt to changing clinical circumstances with flexibility;
  • Capacity to exercise initiative while maintaining strict confidentiality;
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Meditech and Microsoft Office, is an asset;

Employment terms are governed by the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).
