Position Overview:

Reporting to the Facilities Operations Manager and under the daily guidance of the leadhand, the HVACR Technician I is responsible for a diverse range of tasks associated with the installation and upkeep of the institution's heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, as well as other building systems. The role may also involve additional responsibilities related to Physical Resources Operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adheres to and acts upon directives provided by leadhand(s);
  • Engages in the effective utilization of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (TMA) to manage customer expectations, track productivity, and schedule tasks;
  • Services, maintains, and installs gas-fired hot water heating boilers (including controls) and related components within the limits of the technician's certification;
  • Installs, services, and maintains HVAC equipment and associated components according to established schedules, adhering to the technician's certification limits;
  • Installs, services, and maintains gas-fired equipment and related components as per scheduled tasks and within the technician's certification limits;
  • Installs, services, and maintains refrigeration systems and related components as per scheduled tasks, adhering to the technician's certification limits;
  • Services, repairs, and maintains humidifiers, water softeners, and de-ionizers according to schedule;
  • Installs, services, maintains, and repairs mechanical pumps as necessary;
  • Accesses, monitors, controls, and programs Building Automation Systems;
  • Provides support and maintenance for University Access Control Systems and devices, assisting with access control distribution as needed;
  • Tests, controls, and maintains water systems and related equipment;
  • Performs pipe fitting tasks;
  • Engages in soldering and welding (arc or oxyacetylene);
  • Services and maintains compressors and pneumatic controls;
  • Services window air-conditioning units;
  • Services, maintains, and operates chillers and related equipment according to specified schedules;
  • Assists with the support, service, and maintenance of University Life Safety Systems and equipment, adhering to the technician's skill, training, and code requirements;
  • Services, repairs, and maintains all building-related systems, including mechanical, electrical, and structural, as required and within the technician's certification limits;
  • Coordinates with external service providers and agencies to ensure compliance with contractual obligations;
  • Prepares estimates for work orders;
  • Requests, orders, or retrieves necessary materials from suppliers to complete tasks;
  • Ensures sufficient supplies are available for emergency repairs and preventative maintenance;
  • Maintains accurate records to meet internal and external requirements;
  • Prepares reports as required for control, audit, or reporting purposes;
  • Understands and adheres to all University and Departmental Policies and Procedures, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other relevant legislation;
  • Performs additional related duties, including minor tasks of other trades where certification is not required and the work does not exceed personal limitations;
  • Flexibility in work hours is necessary to accommodate temporary shift adjustments, including evening and/or weekend work based on workload demands. Adequate notice will be provided.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Certificate;
  • Certificate of Apprenticeship in HVACR;
  • Current Gas Technician I Certificate or the ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe;
  • Current Ozone Depletion Program Certificate;
  • Extensive experience in building maintenance, including hot water and steam boilers;
  • Extensive experience with HVACR systems and gas-fired equipment;
  • Currently engaged in the trade or enrolled in a recognized apprenticeship program;
  • Valid Class - G Ontario Driver's license;
  • Ability to interpret and work from blueprints and schematics;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Quality Control Systems, email, etc.;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with minimal supervision, sharing information with team members and fostering effective relationships with customers;
  • Customer-focused, responding promptly to needs and utilizing feedback to enhance service;
  • Adaptable to change, making suggestions for improvement;
  • Proactive in maintaining current job knowledge;
  • Respectful of diversity, treating others with understanding and avoiding unnecessary conflict;
  • Self-managed, demonstrating honesty, integrity, and ethical conduct, while accepting accountability for actions and committing to continuous learning;

Compensation:

Pay Rate: $37.19 per hour

Work Hours: This is a full-time, ongoing position with standard hours from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (including a 1/2 hour unpaid lunch break), Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours may be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to workload. Whenever feasible, the manager will adjust the schedule to ensure no more than 40 hours are worked in a week.
