Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant to join our team at the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA). As a Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory services, providing exceptional patient care, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality healthcare.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect and process blood and other specimens, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation in accordance with Fraser Health policies.
- Prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and distribution, while maintaining a high level of quality control.
- Perform clerical duties, such as data entry, test result communication, and inventory management, with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including temperature checks on refrigerators, incubators, and other critical devices.
- Prepare reagents, media, and specimen collection materials, and distribute them as required, ensuring timely and efficient laboratory operations.
- Load specimens for analysis on automated and semi-automated equipment, adhering to established protocols and procedures.
- Perform laboratory tests, such as urinalysis and glucose testing, using specialized equipment and following established protocols.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, adhering to established policies and procedures, and ensuring adequate supply levels at workstations.
- Assist with clerical functions, such as inventory management and notification of inventory levels, as required.
- Provide support for ECG testing, attaching electrodes to patients and operating equipment according to standard procedures.
Requirements
- Grade 12, successful completion of a recognized Laboratory Assistant training program, plus one year's recent, related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to deal with others in a professional and respectful manner.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position, including standing, walking, and lifting.
- Ability to organize work, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to operate related equipment, including computers and laboratory instruments.
- Commitment to developing knowledge and understanding of legislative obligations and provincial commitments, including Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action, In Plain Sight, and United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
