Position Overview

The Rail Operations Specialist is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of various types of locomotives, including electric, diesel-electric, and gas-turbine-electric models. This role involves the handling of liquid products from tank cars, interpreting train orders, signals, and regulations, as well as the timely switching and placement of rail cars.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate hand or ground throw switches, derails, and gates.
  • Control equipment movement using radio communication, hand signals, and lanterns.
  • Apply and release hand brakes to secure or reposition equipment.
  • Manage air hoses, wheel chocks, and the coupling and uncoupling of rail cars.
  • Adhere to safety protocols by wearing required personal protective equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, candidates should meet the following criteria:

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Military experience is advantageous.

Skills and Abilities

  • Dependability and punctuality are essential; reliable transportation is required.
  • Strong communication skills, including verbal, non-verbal, and written forms.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and develop effective plans for completion.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the capability to work collaboratively.
  • Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to follow directions from various levels of management.

Language and Mathematical Skills

Proficiency in reading and interpreting safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals is necessary. Candidates should also be able to write routine reports and effectively present information.

Mathematical skills are required to perform basic calculations and interpret data accurately.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires frequent standing and walking, with occasional lifting of heavy weights. The work environment may involve exposure to various weather conditions, fumes, and moving mechanical parts.
