Cloud Infrastructure Operations Analyst

Victoria, British Columbia, Canada University of Victoria Full time $72,242 - $79,650
Organizational Unit
University of Victoria - VP Finance and Operations - University Systems
Location: Victoria, BC, Canada

Overview:

Research Computing Services is seeking a dedicated professional to join our team, focusing on the management and support of our on-premise cloud systems.

We operate a robust IaaS cloud platform utilizing OpenStack for computing and Ceph for storage across various deployments, including the Arbutus Cloud, recognized as Canada's largest research cloud service. This platform is managed in collaboration with the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, featuring over 44,000 vCPUs and more than 15PB of storage capacity.

Additionally, we maintain several Kubernetes clusters built on OpenStack, which support extensive national and international research initiatives in fields such as physics and astronomy.

We are in search of enthusiastic individuals who aspire to be part of a collaborative team that supports Research Computing.

Key Responsibilities:

The Research Systems Dev-Ops Analyst will report to the Manager and Architect of ARC Infrastructure, contributing to the design, construction, and operational efficiency of the university's research servers and storage solutions.

Team members are responsible for maintaining critical systems that support numerous research groups, including web servers, database servers, and high-performance computing (HPC) systems, as well as cloud infrastructure and container orchestration utilized by researchers both locally and internationally.

These systems must operate continuously throughout the year, and decisions regarding their management can significantly affect the university's commitments to external parties.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and resolving technical issues generated by clients and systems.
  • Installing, configuring, and maintaining hardware and software.
  • Monitoring performance and security, along with usage reporting.
  • Utilizing deployment technologies such as xCAT, Cobbler, Ansible, Puppet, and Terraform.
  • Engaging in systems monitoring and problem-solving.

The technologies employed in this role will evolve, and the position will play a vital role in guiding future technology selections and implementations.

This role demands strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and rectify software and hardware issues while automating administrative tasks.

Effective communication skills are essential for providing technical support and guidance to peers and the user community, as well as for informing stakeholders about the implications of system failures, maintenance, and cybersecurity incidents.

The incumbent will often act as the first responder to system-level issues, using judgment to determine whether to resolve the issue independently or escalate it to senior team members.

In instances where senior staff develop documentation or procedures for resolving specific issues, this role will be involved in reviewing and testing to ensure completeness and effectiveness.

Occasional travel for training or conferences may be required.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field is required, along with substantial experience in systems analysis and web technologies (minimum three years).

Essential qualifications include:

  • System administration experience with Linux.
  • Familiarity with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or its derivatives.
  • Proficiency in scripting and version control (e.g., Bash, PERL, Python, Git).
  • Experience with web applications and REST APIs.
  • Knowledge of databases (MySQL, MariaDB, Postgres).
  • Experience with Ansible and Terraform is advantageous.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to grasp complex technical concepts.
  • Ability to identify and resolve intricate technical challenges.
  • Experience in an academic or research environment.
  • Familiarity with High Performance Computing (HPC) settings.

Equity and Diversity Statement:

The University of Victoria is committed to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within our community.
