Position Overview

Thales is seeking to recruit a Technical Specialist - Combat Systems/C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) to provide support for the Royal Canadian Navy's Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPV) and Joint Support Ship (JSS) class vessels managed by Thales under the AOPS & JSS In-Service Support (AJISS) contract.

The Technical Specialist will deliver technical services and guidance for designated system and equipment repair, operational, and maintenance tasks within their area of expertise and authorization. This encompasses, but is not limited to, Command & Control (Command Management, Navigation Systems); Communications (Internal & External, SATCOM, Radios); Computers (NavIS, networks); and Combat Systems (Surveillance, Reconnaissance, and Weapons).

The C4ISR Technical Specialist will also assist the AJISS Engineering Team with various tasks, including the development and execution of Engineering Changes, creation of Deviations & Waivers, or conducting surveys on board the vessel while docked.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducting a variety of technical investigations (both desktop and on-site) into issues related to system equipment and/or system failures, including failure analysis and solution formulation.
  • Initiating and contributing to engineering change proposals.
  • Overseeing technical service operations for designated vessels and/or systems to ensure material readiness objectives for the Platforms are met.
  • Liaising with OEMs, maintenance service providers, and ship technicians/operators to enhance existing maintenance schedules.
  • Fostering a collaborative relationship within Thales and the customer’s organization to ensure coordination and swift resolution of issues.
  • Preparing documented work scopes suitable for soliciting quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities, or specialist service providers.
  • Reviewing technical documentation and initiating necessary changes.
  • Preparing documents/reports such as pre and post-refit condition assessments, technical investigations, tests & trials, installation set-to-work, and Physical Condition Audits.
  • Supporting test & trials, verification and validation, condition-based monitoring, and class survey activities.
  • Developing strong working practices with ship staff and Service Providers to promote optimal working methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Electronics or Networking Engineering Technician Diploma, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a high technology (networked) technical environment, including work involving the instruction, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of systems such as VHF/UHF/HF communications systems, Satellite Systems, Computer Networks (wired and wireless), Telecom Systems, Radar Systems, Electronic Warfare Systems, Navigation Systems, and Weapons Systems.
  • Alternatively, a minimum of Military QL5 Electronics or Networking Technician certification in an approved Military Trade or Military QL6B Electronics or Networking Technician certification in an approved Military Trade.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military QL6B Electronics or Networking Technician certification in an approved Military Trade.
  • Experience with the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of systems such as Radar Systems, Electronic Warfare Systems, and Weapons Systems.

Special Position Requirements

  • A mix of office work and activities in dockyards and onboard Naval Ships.
  • Willingness to conduct inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships, which may involve bending and twisting.
  • Ability to work aloft and in confined spaces on board ships (training will be provided).
