Department Overview

The Emergency Call Management division encompasses teams focused on Emergency Call Handling and Emergency Call Routing. Our production systems operate on public cloud platforms, ensuring exceptional availability standards.

The Emergency Call Handling team develops SaaS solutions that equip telecommunicators and supervisors with the intelligence and flexibility necessary to save lives. Our call handling software is trusted by numerous agencies, managing over 65% of 9-1-1 calls in the United States, enhancing productivity and coordination in emergency response.

The Emergency Call Routing team specializes in SaaS solutions that deliver both geospatial and traditional call-routing capabilities to various communities and regions. These systems are designed for ultra-high availability, ensuring swift routing of emergency calls to the appropriate public safety answering point (PSAP).

Job Description

As a software engineer within the Emergency Call Management Site Reliability Engineering (ECM-SRE) team, you will collaborate with skilled engineers to enhance the reliability of our public safety products.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and implementing monitoring and observability objectives, including the upkeep of alert response protocols.
  • Establishing and reinforcing high availability and reliability strategies.
  • Managing customer-reported incidents and directing them to the appropriate software teams, necessitating strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Tracking and reporting on service level objectives (SLOs) and error budgets.
  • Coordinating chaos engineering initiatives across various engineering teams.
  • Promoting a culture of site reliability engineering and sharing best practices within the Emergency Call Management division.
  • Providing on-call support in collaboration with engineering teams for production products and services, focusing on incident command to ensure effective incident management.
  • Assisting customer support teams in developing communication materials for clients, requiring excellent communication skills.
  • Facilitating Failure Mode and Effects Analysis with multiple engineering teams.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong passion for observability, reliability, automation, incident response, and fostering innovation.

Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional software development experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Experience in developing cloud-based applications.
  • Proficiency in creating RESTful APIs and applying microservice architectures.
  • Familiarity with modern DevOps tools, including CI/CD pipelines.
  • Understanding of high availability architecture design principles.
  • Knowledge of observability and monitoring practices.
  • Experience with automated testing methodologies.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and persistence.
  • Enthusiasm for learning new technologies and best practices.
Preferred Skills
  • Understanding of site reliability engineering or DevOps practices.
  • Experience with container deployment and orchestration technologies.
  • Knowledge of service level indicators (SLIs) and SLOs.
  • Familiarity with incident response and disaster recovery processes.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Knowledge of chaos engineering principles.
  • Understanding of redundancy and failover strategies.
  • Experience with capacity planning and load balancing.
  • Familiarity with service mesh concepts.
  • Knowledge of feature flags and deployment strategies.
  • Experience with hybrid cloud architectures.
  • Understanding of multi-tenant database architectures.
  • Experience with systems programming and networking concepts.
  • Experience working in Agile teams using methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban.
  • Experience with on-call responsibilities for production products.
