Nurse Mentor

Reporting to the Manager, Medicine, the Clinical Scholar Registered Nurse is responsible for mentoring nurses in their transition into the nursing workforce. This role involves promoting health, assessing, providing care, and treating health conditions through supportive, preventative, therapeutic, palliative, and rehabilitative means to medical patients to attain or maintain optimal function.
Key Responsibilities:- Mentor newly graduated nurses, internationally educated nurses, and nurses looking to upskill in a supernumerary position.
- Provide guidance and support to nurses in their transition into the workforce.
- Assess, plan, and implement care for medical patients to achieve optimal function.
- Develop and maintain knowledge and skills in oncology and palliative care nursing.
- Administer chemotherapy drugs and manage side effects.
- Perform venipunctures to establish IVs and administer IV medications below the drip chamber.
- Manage central lines, including tubing, dressing changes, line removal, and blood sampling.
- Maintain total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
- Work independently and as part of a team to provide high-quality patient care.
- Participate in staff meetings and unit-specific projects.
- Adhere to Brightshores' CARE Behaviours and LEAD Competencies.
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Physical Assessment course.
- CC1 or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of current medical experience within the last five years.
- Oncology and palliative care nursing experience within the last two years.
- Experience in administering chemotherapy drugs and managing side effects.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and adapt to a rapidly changing population and patient needs.
- Leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Interviewing and patient assessment skills.
- Interest and experience in patient education and health promotion.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and continuing education.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
- BCLS certification.
- Additional education in palliative care and oncology.
- Broad medical experience.
- Oncology Certificate.
