The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children's Hospital features a Level III NICU, a Level II NICU, and a neonatal transport team, delivering medical and surgical care to neonates and their families. Our interdisciplinary team is dedicated to family-centered care, emphasizing evidence-based best practices and continuous quality enhancement. McMaster NICU actively participates in various collaborative quality improvement initiatives on provincial, national, and international levels.

Position Overview

As an integral member of the healthcare team, the Child Life Specialist empowers infants, children, adolescents, and their families to achieve optimal development, maintain typical living patterns, reduce psychological distress, and enhance their adjustment as they navigate health changes, hospitalization, and life circumstances. Through preparation, education, therapeutic play, and various intervention strategies, the pediatric population is provided with opportunities to enhance their coping mechanisms. The NICU at McMaster Children's Hospital is a 72-bed unit dedicated to delivering lifesaving care to newborns and their families.

Work Schedule

Days, evenings, and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree.
  • Child Life Certification, or the ability to obtain it within one year of employment.
  • A minimum of one year of experience within the last three years as a Child Life Specialist in an acute, tertiary pediatric care environment.
  • Proven clinical expertise in assessments, planning, and interventions for children, adolescents, and their families.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and capability to provide urgent interventions.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary team members.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in providing both formal and informal education to healthcare teams regarding the Child Life role and the psychosocial needs of children and adolescents related to care management.
  • Understanding of community support roles for children, adolescents, and families.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Knowledge and comfort in supporting families facing end-of-life issues.

As a condition of employment, proof of full COVID-19 vaccination is required.
