About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Teacher Counsellor to join our team at School District #8 (Kootenay Lake). As a Teacher Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational, personal, social, emotional, and career development of students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide emotional and instructional support for at-risk students in a multi-graded environment
  • Collaborate with school staff to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and provide consultation services
  • Support students with learning, emotional, or behavior challenges through co-teaching and counseling
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and community partners
  • Stay up-to-date with best practices, resources, and instruction for counselling support
Requirements
  • Master's degree in counselling psychology or Special Education, recognized by the Teacher Regulation Branch
  • At least 5 years' demonstrated successful teaching experience in a public K-12 school setting in BC
  • Knowledge of the Ministry of Education's current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures
  • Ability to collect behavioral information and perform behavioral screening and/or assessments
  • Experience in implementing and evaluating IEPs in consultation with the classroom teacher(s), Inclusion Support teacher, and district personnel
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work with colleagues to build support for and with staff and students
  • Excellent organizational skills and flexibility
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use technology to support student learning
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced certificate in teacher counselling, counselling psychology, or special education
  • Knowledge of Trauma Informed practices, conflict resolution, and restorative practices
  • Experience with Trauma-Focused Schools and Open Parachute
  • Ability to implement protocols and procedures related to threat and risk assessment
  • Experience teaching/co-teaching in a flexible, multi-graded learning environment
