Job Title: School Counsellor

We are seeking a qualified School Counsellor to join our team at Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools. As a School Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting the educational, personal, social, emotional, and career development of students.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Advance students' educational achievement through goal setting, assistance with the development of student learning plans, and activities that promote effective work and study habits.
  • Facilitate the goals of career education, with an emphasis on decision making, personal planning, and career awareness.
  • Provide individual, group, and family counselling and intervention services.
  • Provide leadership in the identification, placement, and programming for students with complex mental health and behavioural challenges.
  • Facilitate student and family referrals to community resources and services and liaise between school, home, and agencies as appropriate.
  • Report and/or assist with reporting to the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD).
  • Develop, coordinate, and provide leadership in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and/or student supportive plans with school and community care teams for students who require moderate and intensive behaviour support.
  • Teach, co-teach, and/or support the delivery of prevention, social responsibility, and personal safety curriculum/programs.
  • Provide in-service and support to school staff in the areas of mental health, suicide protocol, and child abuse prevention.
  • Participate as an active member of school-based team (S-BT) and Learning Services Support Team (LSST).
  • Respond to critical incidents.
Requirements:
  • Certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Master's Degree in school counselling and/or counselling psychology.
  • Minimum 2 years successful classroom experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the BC Curriculum model and a concept/competency-driven curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to consider and respond appropriately to the needs, feels, and capabilities of others.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize for effective instruction differentiation, and assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to capture and maintain students' interest, effort, participation, and enthusiasm for both the context and process of learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all students.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learning.
  • Demonstrated understanding and incorporation of Indigenous teachings and learnings.
