Department: Institute for Aerospace Studies

Course Title: ROB311H1S: Artificial Intelligence

Course Overview: This course provides a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence through a mathematical lens. It will explore the evolution of AI, significant achievements in the domain, and cover essential topics such as the philosophy of AI, problem-solving search techniques, knowledge representation, reasoning, logic, planning, and various learning paradigms. A segment of the curriculum will address ethical considerations in AI, embodied AI, and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.

Position Details:

  • Estimated Number of Positions: One (1)
  • Estimated Teaching Assistant Support: Two (2) TAs
  • Projected Course Enrollment: Approximately 72 students
  • Class Schedule: Thursdays 1 – 3 pm & Fridays 3 – 5 pm
  • Hours: 1 HCE (up to a maximum of 230 hours)
  • Sessional Dates: January 1 – April 30, 2025

Compensation: The salary will adhere to CUPE minimum salary rates for a 0.65 half course (HCE), which includes vacation pay. The rates for Sessional Lecturers vary based on experience and qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must possess at least a Master's degree in Robotics or Computer Science, along with an undergraduate degree in a relevant robotics discipline such as computer engineering, control, or mechatronics. A solid academic foundation in machine learning and computational/numerical methods is essential. Expertise in artificial intelligence, robotics, and mechatronics is also required, alongside strong knowledge of robotic sensing, control, and spatial perception. Proficiency in engineering mathematics, particularly in complex variables and ordinary differential equations, is necessary. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, a commitment to teaching, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment are crucial.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience as an instructor in Robotics or Computer Science is advantageous, as is familiarity with the specific needs of the program and a strong rapport with faculty members.

Responsibilities:

  • Preparing and delivering lectures
  • Creating and grading examinations
  • Providing constructive feedback and support to students, both individually and in groups
  • Recording and managing grades
  • Adapting to online teaching requirements if necessary

Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are not eligible to apply for this position.
