Job Title: Teacher Counsellor

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Teacher Counsellor to join our team at the York Region District School Board.

About the Role

The successful candidate will provide guidance and support to students, teachers, and parents to promote academic success, social-emotional learning, and mental health well-being.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) in consultation with teachers, parents, and district personnel.
  • Provide behavioural screening and assessments, and collect behavioural information to inform instruction and support.
  • Collaborate with the school-based team to provide a continuum of services that support the educational, personal, social, emotional, and career development of students.
  • Support the implementation of competency-based IEPs for students in Ministry Categories R and H, and provide consultation services for other Ministry categories.
  • Access and coordinate school, district, and community services/resources, including Interagency Care Teams.
  • Support colleagues to implement proactive, research-based teaching practices that promote social-emotional learning and mental health literacy in the classroom.
  • Implement protocols and procedures related to threat and risk assessment, and provide direct instruction to students on conflict resolution, social skills, and life skills.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in counselling psychology or Special Education, recognized by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • At least 5 years' demonstrated successful teaching experience in a public K-12 school setting in BC.
  • Knowledge of the Ministry of Education's current philosophy, teaching practices, and evaluation/assessment/reporting procedures.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, compassionate, respectful, and collaborative relationships with colleagues, students, parents/guardians, and community partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced certificate in teacher counselling, counselling psychology, or special education.
  • Knowledge of Trauma-Informed practices, conflict resolution, and restorative practices.
  • Experience with Trauma-Focused Schools and Open Parachute.
  • Ability to teach/co-teach in a flexible, multi-graded learning environment.
