Salary Range: $63,000 - $75,000

Role Overview:

As a Mortgage Underwriter, you will be instrumental in evaluating and underwriting credit applications submitted by Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers. Your expertise will guide the approval of qualified loans while maintaining a balance between risk management and corporate production objectives. You will serve as a vital resource for Coast Capital Savings (CCS) mobile partners, offering insights on credit risk evaluation, deal structuring, and overall loan presentation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide mentorship and training to colleagues, fostering knowledge sharing and enhancing team collaboration.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers to ensure exceptional service delivery.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to guarantee:
    • An outstanding member experience.
    • Innovation and growth within the Retail Credit Department and CCS, exploring creative solutions to meet members' credit needs while ensuring a positive customer experience.
    • Operational excellence within the Retail Credit Department and CCS.
  • Stay informed on industry trends and emerging fraud risks to safeguard CCS against potential threats in credit approvals.
  • Analyze risk and pricing trends in loan applications, recommending policy adjustments to balance production, risk, and profitability.
  • Achieve proficiency in Filogix and Link Lender systems.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of external product providers (e.g., CMHC, Genworth, CRI).
  • Ensure compliance with CCS lending guidelines, corporate policies, and external partner requirements during the underwriting process.
  • Recommend application and/or variance authority, providing sound rationale for any exceptions to corporate policy.
  • Review and verify all documentation and calculations for accuracy and authenticity during the underwriting process, including updating the CALMS application.
  • Communicate approvals through CALMS/Lending Highway to Mobile Mortgage Specialists or prepare commitment letters via Filogix/Link Lender for External Brokers.
  • Coordinate with Fulfillment Branch lenders to ensure clear and timely Fulfillment Instructions.
  • Package documents and submit them to Lending Operations promptly.
  • Work closely with Mobile Mortgage Specialists and External Brokers to provide guidance on deal structuring and necessary adjustments to align with CCS's mission of enhancing the financial well-being of our members while adhering to sound risk practices.
  • Deliver decisions within established service level agreements.

Candidate Profile:

  • A minimum of 4 years of experience in lending, with a solid understanding of all facets of Retail Lending, including specialty lending and unsecured loans.
  • High School Diploma plus completion of a Diploma Program in Business Administration or a related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of CALMS and the Lending Highway.
  • Proficiency in T24 Banking system as it pertains to lending products and demand accounts.
  • Strong skills in PC usage and MS Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Experience with Filogix/Link Lender is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Mobile Mortgage Specialist and External Broker applications is essential.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • A collaborative mindset, capable of thriving in a dynamic and occasionally high-pressure environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate respectfully and effectively in both written and verbal forms.
  • Capability to underwrite deals without direct interaction with borrowers.
  • Skill in assessing the reliability of information provided in support of applications.
  • Aptitude for detecting fraud or illegal activities related to income, documentation, or collateral.
  • Ability to represent CCS's interests professionally and confidently with third parties when necessary.
  • Competence in resolving complex applications and situations while ensuring a positive member experience, regardless of the final credit decision.
