We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Support Specialist to join our team at School District #60 (Peace River North). As an Education Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing support to students with diverse needs, working collaboratively with teachers and other district personnel to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide instructional support to students, implementing educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/administrator and providing students with feedback for completion of daily work.
- Construct and locate instructional materials, games, displays, and learning centers to enhance student engagement and learning.
- Operate computers, audiovisual equipment, and adaptive technology to support student learning.
- Supervise students during educational activities, observing and recording academic and behavioral assessment data to assist teachers in monitoring student progress.
- Copy, transcribe, type, file, and maintain records to ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation.
- Implement behavior management programs as determined by the teacher/resource team, providing support to students with behavioral challenges.
- Provide person/health care and physical safety assistance to students, ensuring their well-being and safety at all times.
- Attend team and parent professional development meetings as required, staying up-to-date on best practices and district initiatives.
- Assist in the implementation of programs requiring intensive behavior interventions, working collaboratively with teachers and other district personnel.
- Supervise students during classroom, gym, school, playground, and community field trips, ensuring their safety and well-being.
- Foster student independence and appropriate peer interactions, promoting a positive and inclusive learning environment.
- Work collaboratively as a member of a team, communicating effectively with teachers, administrators, and other district personnel.
- Perform other job-related assigned duties as directed, which are within the knowledge and skills required by the job description.
- Grade 12 or equivalency
- Willingness to maintain current CPI status
- Level 1 First Aid Certificate may be required
- Education Assistant Certificate, which includes documented training in the following areas:
- Pervasive developmental disorders, including ASD, FASD, and complex behavioral needs
- Developmental and sensory needs and disorders
- Personal care: dressing, toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, seizure management
- Technology-assisted programs (e.g., Augmentative communication devices, Boardmaker, Apps, and other software)
- Behavior support: conflict resolution, anger management, nonviolent behavioral interventions, behavior/safety/crisis/emergency plans
- Learning challenges: learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning challenges
- Formal POPARD training or experience
- Proven ability to remain calm in difficult situations
- Proven ability to develop positive relationships with students
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible/adaptable when faced with new or challenging situations
- Physical ability to keep up with an active child
- Ability to work independently and set priorities
- WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
- Ability to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment
