Job Title: Laboratory Clerk, Bacteriology

About the Role

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Laboratory Clerk to join our team at the Public Health Services Authority (PHSA). As a Laboratory Clerk, you will play a critical role in supporting the laboratory team by preparing specimens for testing, verifying specimen information, and processing test requisitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare specimens for testing by performing duties such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and loading samples.
  • Verify specimen type and accuracy, sort and assign laboratory numbers, and apply barcode labels according to established procedures.
  • Receive incoming specimens, requisitions, and check for accuracy and completeness of information.
  • Process test requisitions by entering patient data into computer systems, issuing new patient identification numbers, and obtaining or clarifying missing information.
  • Respond to requests for test results, fax same as required.
  • File and organize records, such as requisitions, statistical information.
  • Identify and communicate operational issues and computer/equipment-related problems to supervisor.
  • Store and retrieve specimens under appropriate conditions, document and ship samples to other laboratories and discard samples according to established procedures.

Requirements

  • Grade 12, medical terminology, and two years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to keyboard 45 wpm, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, deal with others effectively, organize work, operate related equipment, and physically carry out the duties of the position.
  • Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
