Job Summary

Confederation College is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Chief Flight Instructor to lead our Flight Training Unit. As a key member of our aviation team, you will be responsible for the operational control of our flight training program, ensuring the highest standards of safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Management: Oversee the overall pilot training program, ensuring it meets the requirements of the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
  • Supervision: Supervise all flight and ground instructors, including the designation of a Class 1 or Class 2 flight instructor to supervise a Class 4 flight instructor.
  • Recruitment and Hiring: Recruit and hire flight and ground instructors, ensuring they meet the necessary qualifications and standards.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the quality and content of ground school instruction and flight training provided by the flight training unit, conducting performance reviews as necessary.
  • Documentation: Approve the appointment of ground instructors and ensure the accuracy of Pilot Training Records, course reports, and other documents related to the training process.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that flight instruction is based on the contents of the appropriate flight instructor guide and flight training manual, and that all necessary publications are readily available to trainees.
  • Operational Control: Ensure that the daily flight record is used for operational control, and that all solo training flights are properly authorized by a flight instructor and acknowledged by the trainee.
  • Flight Safety: Make decisions with respect to flight safety during flying periods, and confirm the continuing validity of staff licences and ratings endorsed on a licence.
  • Staff Development: Ensure that all staff members are kept informed of any changes to the regulations and standards, and disseminate and act upon aeroplane safety information.
  • Operational Planning: Develop and implement an operational control system in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations, and liaison with Transport Canada on all matters concerning flight training operations.
  • Delegation: Delegate duties to the assistant chief flight instructor, and develop and implement a plan of action in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
  • Safety Management: Participate in the Safety Management System, and review and revise as required operating policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • Education: Minimum 3-year diploma/degree or equivalent in Aviation or Management.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of management and/or supervision in the field of Aviation, with a minimum of 1,000 hours of flying time, including instruction, commercial or corporate flying at the multi-engine IFR level.
  • Skills: Computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel; problem-solving, communication, conflict resolution, and team-building skills.
