Job Overview
The Structural Steel Technician plays a crucial role in the maintenance and enhancement of railway infrastructures. This position involves outdoor work to assist in the replacement and repair of damaged components. Additionally, the technician will engage in the fabrication and assembly of new elements for timber, concrete, and steel railway structures, including bridges and culverts.
Key Responsibilities
- Fabricate, assemble, and construct components for timber, concrete, and steel railway bridges.
- Utilize a variety of hand and power tools, both common and specialized.
- Conduct minor maintenance on tools necessary for assigned tasks.
- Remove and replace defective elements of bridges, culverts, and other structural components.
- Handle materials through loading, unloading, sorting, shoveling, and distribution.
- Ensure clean-up is performed after the completion of work.
- Operate Hirail boom trucks for the loading, transportation, and unloading of bridge and culvert materials on both road and rail.
Working Conditions
- Work within a unionized team environment, performing various maintenance, repair, and replacement tasks in a safety-sensitive setting around heavy equipment outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
- Exposure to challenging outdoor conditions, including extreme temperatures and noisy environments.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Willingness to travel away from home for extended periods.
- Physical capability to lift weights ranging from 50 to 85 lbs.
- Ability to climb and work at heights while utilizing fall protection equipment.
Qualifications
- Experience in structural environments is essential.
- Background in physical labor, including lifting and occasional heavy lifting.
- Completion of high school or possession of a General Education Diploma (GED).
- Participation in and successful completion of training programs such as timber, crane operation, Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR), Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG), and National Safety Code (NSC).
- Certification as a Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) Welder.
- Possession of a Class 3 Driver's License with air endorsement or equivalent.
- Experience in physical labor is advantageous, particularly in lifting and heavy lifting.
- Ability to interpret detailed drawings and sketches for various repair and construction tasks.
- Commitment to adhering to strict safety guidelines.
- Knowledge of cleaning, fabrication, installation, repair, and maintenance of steel and concrete structures, including culverts.
Training
The role requires attendance in both classroom and on-the-job training provided by CN.
This position is part of a union, with pay and benefits determined by the relevant collective agreement.
