About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Youth Support Worker to join our team on an on-call basis. As a Youth Support Worker, you will provide support to students with diverse needs and challenges in various school settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Implement individual, small group, and class-wide programming under the direction of and liaising with the classroom teacher.
  • Support the implementation of student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals and assist in documentation of progress.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to teach and implement various self-regulation, social skills, and/or social communication programs.
  • Support students and collaborate with staff to support transitions to and from educational placements.
  • Collaborate with families, involve support agencies, social workers, medical/clinical practitioners, and district staff, where appropriate.
  • Supervise students, as required, and support students during times when problematic behavior is more likely to occur.
  • Prepare instructional aid materials; set up and operate instructional aid materials.
  • Maintain and evaluate records/data of observed student behavior.
  • Collaborate with team members regarding Behavior Support Plans.
  • Manage verbal and/or physical 'acting out' behavior.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 plus 2 years of full-time equivalent post-secondary education and/or a diploma in any of the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration/Migration studies, Ethnic/Cultural/Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family Studies, Applied Behaviour Science, or Education.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' related work experience with students exhibiting challenging behaviors.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in implementing various learning and behavior management strategies.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with individual students and school teams in order to build school capacity.
  • Participation and facilitation in professional development opportunities relating to behavior management (e.g., non-violent crisis intervention, conflict resolution) would be an asset.
  • Must be willing to obtain Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) training.
  • Must be willing to travel to various schools throughout the district.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Direct work experience with children or youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in the areas of social-emotional learning, behavior, or mental health, particularly in an educational setting.
  • Sound knowledge of evidence-informed practice for supporting students with a wide range of social-emotional, behavioral, or mental health needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in implementing various behavior support and/or self-regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with different needs.
  • Experience working with integrated children in multiple classrooms.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team, under the direction of the teacher, as well as ability to relate well with students and other interested parties such as families, foster parents, social workers, mental health teams, and clinical practitioners.
  • Working knowledge of computers and special education programs an asset.
  • Experience working with students with learning disabilities, who are at risk, or have experienced complex trauma.
  • Training and/or experience supporting students who are emotionally fragile is an asset.
