Position Overview
As a valued member of Dynacare, the Pathology Assistant plays a crucial role in our Histology department. This position is dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of clinical and scientific excellence in our testing processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough gross examinations of surgical specimens, selecting, dissecting, and preparing tissue sections for advanced processing and analysis.
- Execute the embedding of tissue into blocks for further examination.
- Provide precise and efficient gross descriptions while documenting findings in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
- Review clinical histories to ensure comprehensive understanding of specimens.
- Implement positive patient identification protocols to maintain traceability of requisitions and specimens.
- Set up and operate laboratory equipment in preparation for specimen examinations.
- Load tissue processors in alignment with defined standard operating procedures.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation of activities within the laboratory.
- Organize and prepare specimens for laboratory examination and ensure traceability of results.
- Manage laboratory inventory, ensuring supplies and reagents are adequately stocked.
- Uphold cleanliness and sanitation in the work area, adhering to standard laboratory practices.
- Participate in quality assurance programs, ensuring compliance with company and health ministry guidelines.
- Stay informed on current policies and procedures relevant to the role.
- Utilize required protective equipment to ensure safety in the laboratory environment.
- Report any equipment defects or hazards to management promptly.
- Undertake additional duties as necessary to support laboratory operations.
Qualifications
- Proficient knowledge of Histology and Medical terminology.
- Strong understanding of Gross Anatomy and dissection techniques.
- Educational background in Laboratory Sciences or equivalent.
- Bachelor of Science in Biology or related field.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment with strong communication skills.
- CAP certification is advantageous.
- Excellent computer proficiency.
- Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and independent judgment.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Capacity to perform under pressure while maintaining test integrity.
- Ability to engage in prolonged periods of concentration.
Working Environment
- Operate within a medical laboratory setting.
- Perform duties that may require stationary standing or sitting with repetitive hand movements.
- High visual acuity is necessary.
- Ability to lift objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Exposure to biohazard materials and laboratory noise.
- Shift work may be required.
- Potential exposure to chemicals and radioactive materials.
