Qualifications and Requirements

We are seeking a qualified Mental Health Specialist to join our team at Island Health. The successful candidate will possess a Baccalaureate Degree in a health-related discipline and recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or alcohol and drug addiction.

Minimum two years of experience working within or with Indigenous communities is required, as well as two years of recent related experience in areas requiring understanding of trauma in the context of Indigenous people. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of mental health and alcohol and drug addiction issues, psychiatric and suicide/homicide risk assessments, and crisis intervention and response techniques.

The successful candidate will also have knowledge of available programs and services, their interrelationships, and their function in delivering care in the community, as well as knowledge of applicable legislation such as the Mental Health Act, Child Protection legislation, and the Adult Guardianship Act.

A valid BC Driver's License is also required.

Key Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to work within VIHA's framework and standards within rehabilitation/recovery, harm reduction focused model.
  • Interpersonal and clinical skills, including crisis intervention, stabilization, de-escalation, and brief psychotherapy.
  • Knowledge of support services and resources within respective geography available for Indigenous clients.
  • Cultural competence and understanding of the significance of culture in relation to individual, family, and community health services.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with difficult/at-risk clients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and to proactively manage and resolve conflict.
