Position Overview

*This is a temporary position with a duration of 6 months, subject to a notice period of 2 weeks or 1 pay period, whichever is longer.*

The Mid-Level Financial Accountant plays a crucial role in supporting the Manager of Accounting Services by ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data. This position involves investigating account discrepancies for compliance and establishing quality control measures over financial transactions and reporting. The accountant will also engage in various accounting tasks, including data analysis, preparation of financial statements on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis, assisting with budgeting and forecasting, performing account reconciliations, and enhancing Excel-based financial tools.

As an integral member of the Accounting and Finance Team, the Mid-Level Financial Accountant is responsible for delivering high-quality customer service while adhering to accounting principles and St.Amant's policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Educational:

  • Completion of post-secondary education in accounting at an intermediate level or an equivalent combination of education and experience in accounting.

Professional:

  • Intermediate to advanced stages of a recognized accounting program (CPA), or a business degree with a major in accounting, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Two to four years of progressive experience in accounting, including intermediate-level responsibilities.
  • Comprehensive understanding of fundamental accounting principles and procedures.
  • Experience with general ledger operations and the month-end/year-end closing processes.
  • Proficient in accounting software and administration.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Numerical aptitude and quantitative skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision to achieve objectives.
  • Experience in non-profit accounting is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with Virtuo Systems and Caseware is a plus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements, including journal entry preparation and input according to the closing schedule.
  • Analyze revenues and expenses to ensure accurate monthly recording.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations.
  • Support cash flow and forecasting analyses.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to implement process enhancements.
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile financial transactions.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Engage in setting financial standards and participate in the forecasting process.
  • Contribute to departmental goal-setting initiatives.
  • Assist senior accounting staff in creating complex Excel files.
  • Analyze budget variances and communicate findings effectively.
  • Perform ad hoc duties or special projects as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with the Accounting Team to foster a problem-solving approach to process review and improvements.
  • Support the Supervisor of Financial Reporting with audit-related documentation to ensure compliance.
