Overview: The Project Delivery Department is in search of a Senior Project Engineer to contribute to a vibrant team engaged in significant infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing wastewater treatment facilities. These initiatives are pivotal for the Metro Vancouver area, aiming to elevate water quality and improve the living standards for a vast population while representing a substantial investment in public infrastructure. The position entails acting as a project manager or assistant project manager for various projects that support the initial and enabling phases of the wastewater treatment upgrades. Additionally, the role includes assisting with strategic initiatives such as securing funding from governmental bodies and overseeing critical activities and workflows.
Candidate Profile: You are a qualified engineer with a keen interest in project management and a commitment to executing impactful infrastructure projects. Ideally, you possess a civil engineering background with experience in medium to large-scale infrastructure undertakings, although applicants from other engineering disciplines will also be considered. You demonstrate excellent communication skills, are highly organized, self-driven, and thrive in collaborative environments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct complex engineering and project management tasks, including project design and oversight for large-scale initiatives. Utilize professional principles and practices to ensure effective outcomes.
- Evaluate requirements and propose optimal strategies to achieve project objectives.
- Oversee project budgets, monitor expenditures, and ensure efficient use of allocated resources. Engage in both short-term and long-term planning.
- Make informed decisions and provide recommendations on various issues guided by broad policies and mandates. Employ creativity to develop original, practical, and cost-effective solutions.
- Prepare and review project designs, technical documentation, and contract specifications for consulting services, equipment, and construction. Act as the representative for Metro Vancouver in project and contract obligations, including site inspections and regulatory compliance.
- Guide the actions of consultants, recommend scope changes, and negotiate new terms as necessary. Manage a wide range of project dimensions, including legal, property, public engagement, and interactions with various government levels and regulatory agencies.
- Communicate complex concepts clearly and persuade stakeholders to adopt specific viewpoints, supporting your position with evidence and relevant experience. Typically act as a project leader, fostering teamwork, collaboration, and efficiency.
- May supervise professional engineers and/or technical staff involved in intricate technical tasks. Review colleagues' work and provide guidance to consulting engineers and technical personnel. Serve as a resource for staff seeking advice on potential approaches and problem-solving.
- Collaborate with senior engineers, management, and government officials on regulatory or policy initiatives impacting Metro Vancouver. Participate in the design, preparation, and approval of engineering standards in your area of expertise.
- Perform additional related duties as necessary.
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Applied Science degree in a relevant engineering discipline, with 4-6 years of recent related experience following professional registration, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Membership or eligibility for immediate membership as a registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
- Strong technical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles and their application in relevant disciplines. Ability to serve as a resource for staff and provide practical guidance for complex situations.
- Capability to interpret and apply engineering and technical guidelines related to your area of specialization, including technical manuals, codes, regulations, and corporate policies. Ability to adapt guidelines for unique or challenging situations.
- Demonstrated contract administration and project management skills. Proven ability to organize and prioritize a complex series of project components to meet multiple deadlines with high attention to detail.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Ability to convey complex ideas effectively and persuade others to adopt specific methodologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to cultivate respectful working relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders in complex and time-sensitive scenarios.
- Ability to operate under broad direction and exercise significant independent judgment in problem-solving. Capacity to identify opportunities to address emerging needs.
- Understanding of organizational culture and processes necessary to achieve work objectives; uphold Metro Vancouver's reputation through positive interactions with other organizations and the public.
- Ability to mentor and enhance the effectiveness of junior engineers and technical staff as required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project.
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's license.
- Note: Candidates with less experience may be considered for the Project Engineer level, along with the corresponding compensation.
