About the Role

The Clinical Laboratory Technician (CLT) operates under the supervision of management, collaborating closely with all personnel in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (PLM). The CLT is responsible for various tasks associated with the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory testing. Key responsibilities include: specimen collection, receipt, and processing; data entry; preparation of media, reagents, and smears; sterilization; clerical tasks; and loading specimens onto analyzers. Additional duties may encompass supply management, troubleshooting, and providing customer service.

Accurate patient identification and meticulous specimen handling are critical components of this role. Responsibilities may vary depending on the operational needs of the laboratory site or division where the CLT is employed. The CLT may be required to work on rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, and may need to travel to various locations, including long-term care facilities and private residences. Interaction with diverse stakeholders and clients is also expected. Adherence to all relevant policies and procedures is mandatory, along with strict compliance with safety and infection control protocols. The CLT must demonstrate the ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, maintain a professional appearance, and provide excellent customer service.

Qualifications

We invite applications from candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent qualifications.
  • Successful completion of the Medical Laboratory Assistant examinations from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) and current registration with CSMLS.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Manual dexterity for handling sharp instruments and small items.
  • Capability to perform tasks with a high level of precision.
  • Competence in accurately labeling specimens and organizing slides and requisitions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in operational procedures.
  • Basic computer skills; experience with Meditech is preferred.
  • Reliable transportation may be necessary for travel to various sites.
  • Proficiency in additional languages is an asset, with French being preferred.

Compensation

The hourly wage for this position is $26.27.
